| | Hi I am feeling low and discouraged..need prayers. this is my second year to be vbs director. last year I spent 2000.00 dollars for everything that was needed..the church budget was 1000.00. we had a carnival funraiser and raised around 400.00..the rest came out of my pocket..but that didn't bother me in the least. because I had the money and was giving it as a donation...this year the church announced that we were low on money and have a big loan that needs paid off..so I thought ok we will have acouple of fun raisers to raise the money for vbs...well we did the flamingo flocking and raised 791.00. we are starting a pie in the face contest with members of our youth group...and going to do the carnival again..we thought about charging 10.00 per child for registration to cover the cost of hats and shirts...I was informed this morning that some of the people in the church was complaining because we were going to charge for the kids to register..which I already decided not to do..but now they don't want to charge anything for the carnival either...but yet they don't want to give vbs any money...My daughter nancy is my co-director and here is where i need your prayers..it took me along time to get her in a church and to get her saved but since she has been it has been wonderful...we change pastors acouple years ago right after she got saved..nothing against the pastor but he wants to send all our money to eqaudor to help the orphans I have nothing against that but my daughter and I feel that we have orphans in our own country that needs the help also. I was also informed that they didn't like me donating money for vbs...I know this is long but I really don't know what to do..nancy says she won't go back to church again and doesn't want to help with vbs..please pray for both of us to see this through because really its all about the children and bringing them gods word...thanks |

I have seen so much of this recently on this board...have to believe Satan is really angry about all the good that is happening in our churches and especially in VBS. Lifting all of you up to the Lord!!! Blessings! kimberly

| Dear Peggy,
My prayers are with you and for your daughter. May your church put finances aside and focus on telling children about Jesus. That is what God wants us to do. Blessings on your program and for having a giving heart.
I have seen it over and over again when kids are told about Jesus it will be a lifetime thing. If you wait till they are adults it is much harder to get them to church.
To the other issue, sometimes Pastors have a special project they like to promote. Does your church help with local projects for the needy? I worked a Join Hands Day(Thrivent Finanical for Lutherans) project yesterday at a shelter for needy families, I saw proverty but also familes raising beautiful children. They are living in one room with three beds a sink, shower , toliet, microwave and frig. There is a closet. That is all. Groups volunteer to bring in a meal once a day. If you want to cook you use the grill outside or the microwave. The kids play on a dirt field. You said your Pastor is new maybe someone should tell him about areas or groups in your community that need help.
You are not alone.....God is with you......and so is our prayers.
Let us know how your vbs turns out.

| Peggy, my thoughts and prayers are with you. I find it quite odd that you've been asked to no longer donate funds to VBS? I would certainly follow that thread to it's source and get a clear explanation for this request. I wish I had great words of wisdom to help you but all I can say is continue to pray and follow your heart.

| | Dear Peggy, God bless your commitment to the VBS ministry. You keep right on supporting this in every way. It is a blessing to be able to give financial support. There are so many people that don't think twice in turning in such small receipts as $5.00 or less when purchasing something for the church or any non profit organization. This really bothers me. I think a more giving spirit is needed in this world. I just purchased over $5.00 in postcard stamps to send out Sunday School birthday and baptism birthday cards for June. There is no way I am going to ask the church to reimburse me even though it is a Board of Christian Education project. Our church which has a day school is also in financial difficulties. We have a very intense voters meeting coming up in which I am afraid will involve some sort of a motion that will lead to the closing of our school. It seems like our church is always cutting the children's ministies first. When I first joined the congregation, there was no respect of the children at all. We have come a long way and I have learned that those against supporting the children are very few in numbers but very vocal and intimidating. VBS has always been important to the congregation so that helps. The loudest and most annoying voice vocally fights against having a nursery. We do not have a nursery because he was the leader on the building committee and made sure there was no room for one in our new building. This year there is no money for anything. We can barely pay salaries of pastors, secretary and teachers. Our VBS has always been creative in keeping expenses to a bare minimum and will need to get those creative juices running harder this year. We rely on donations, however, we do not want a person's gifts to ever be a financial burden. We need to reimburse the craft and food stations for sure. Maybe those complaining of your generous gift are either not so financially blessed and are jealuos or more likely, maybe they can afford to be generous but feel guilty they do not give as you do? You are giving from your heart. God bless you!

| Praying for your situation- just remember that Satan fights hardest against that which will bless God the most.

Check out VBS Groupies for resources to help with the planning of your VBS. |

| | Peggy, I am sorry you and Nancy are going through this right now. VBS is so important and very much a hometown mission; yet some may see is otherwise. I will pray for your church and for all to remain in unity.

| | Peggy, I too will be praying for you and Nancy. Our church also is very cost consious and gave me 500.00 for everyting and that included the kit and 150.00 worth of stuff the PW ordered. So reaslly I had 200.00. We also used the fundraising kit and got 60.00 and I wanted to do another fundraiser with the m7m containers but was told that we had already asked for enough. We asked each person for 3.00 and each family for 3o juice boxes and 36 120z soft drinks. My husband and I ususally spend about 1000.00 at least of our own and like Adrianne it blows my mnd when these people turn in these 5.00 receipts. We too were told that we wre not to use our money for stuff. but it is ours right. Peggy, do what you need to because ultimately you answer to God!!! A couple years ago, I directed VBS at a different church and no one wanted to do anything. Their idea of preparation was order the books a week before and show up, serve cookies and go home. Well, I and 2 others that i recruited worked and worked and planned and planned. The week of VBS we had people show up and run roughshod over the ones that had planned. It was chaso and because I took a person aside and told them that they needed to back up It caused a rift in that church. (This person had not been to church in 4 months until the night of VBS where when it was time for announcements jumped up before I could get to the front of the church and proceeded in telling kids and all how things were going to go.) Anyway, the church had record attendance that week and the kids thought VBS w2as great. but afterwards the criticism was I paid to much attention to decor and not enough to teaching the Bible. I was not a teacher...I was the director. Anyway there was a lot more in terms of stress but I decided to never do VBS again. You know though it is a ministry and one that i tru;y feel that I have a calling for and even though you have grumpy old church people who just want to sit back and complain and yet offer nothing I feel that it is truly the oppurtunity of a lifetime. and if I want to spend my money then so be it. Yes it would be nice if the church as a whole was not so greedy but oh well, maybe that is why God gave extra to others. Stick in there and we will be praying for you!!!!!!!!11
With prayer,
Lynette |
