I couldn't find any suggestions of what to put into the pocket of the bears that our children were keeping.  So, I scanned the pages which contained small images of the Operation Kid-to-Kid posters.  I cropped them to size, then printed them on cardstock (12 to a page) and cut them apart.  We used the posters to share the stories of the children in Africa; then after the bears were made, our kids loved choosing a pocket-sized poster to put in the pocket of the bear they were keeping as a reminder to pray for the child who would be receiving the other bear they made!

What a great idea. I didn't even think about putting anything in the pocket of the bears the kids were keeping. A copy of a short prayer the kids could say each night to pray for the African children would have been nice too. Since most of our VBS-ers come from our church, I just might print out something to give them to take home and put in their bears.

Thanks for the tip!

I was in our local Goodwill today and saw something that made me heartsick. A prayer bear - already.  How sad that someone (or someone's parent) did not think enough of it to keep it.

Saying a prayer for the child that receives it. It may bless the receiver in many ways and bring a child who needs it to God.

I had two sisters come to me the day after they made their Prayer Bears wanting to give the bears back so that they could be sent to more children in Africa. It was a very sweet gesture, but I told the girls that I would really like for them to keep the bears. I explained that although it is nice for the children in Africa to receive the bears, it is equally important that these children are prayed for, and that the Prayer Bears are a reminder for them to pray for the children so far away in Africa. The sisters happily took their bears back and promised to pray for the children in Africa. Although I know this aspect of the bears was explained in Crafts where the children made the bears, I think I will send out some reminders through our monthly newsletter, and in the next children's sermon I do, that prayer is powerful and we need to remember to continue to pray for these children long after VBS is over.
