| I know this isn't exactly related to Power Lab, but I would appreciate it if you could share your perspective on this. Last year, I directed Heroes Unmasked, and it was a very neat experience, however attendence was not what we hoped it to be. We saved the kit and all the supplies from HU so we could do it again. But now, Group has come out with Wild West Fun Fest. I'm not sure which one to go with. WWFF seems like a neat program because it connects with the recent VBS theme. However, it is $50 more expensive, too. On the other hand, I think the kids might get sick of Heroes Unmasked two years in a row. Ideas, please! Thank you.

| | Hey James! The WW looks like an amazing program, but we are cowboy'd out!! We did HU last year, and the attendance was not great, but those who came had a blast. We will do it again, but modify a bit. And a lot more PR too. The Bible has lot's of Heroes, so we will change a few for those who did come last year so they will not get a duplicate program. We ended HU in the Sanctuary with drama depicting Mary at the empty tomb. That was neat for me, as I played Mary and my hubby John played Jesus. We were asked to do that again. Here are the link... http://www.imagestation.com/album/pictures.html?id=2099045497 PS....I know this is the 'wrong' thread for this, sorry.

| James, it is more expensive but you get 20 CDs, 50 treat bags, trading cards, etc. I'm willing to bet it will end up costing you less money!

| | James, I would suggest doing Wild West Fall Fest. You could invite back all of your VBS kids and it would be a continuation of Avalanche Ranch that the kids would love. God Bless, Josh T. in Ohio

| | We're doing WWFF for sure. HU was great but I also don't want the community to think we are repeating ourselves. We will use some of the games from HU and incorporate some of the new game ideas from WWFF. This year will be our 4th carnival in our town. The first two years were just carnival without no real theme. We had some 20 game booths and lots of candy for the kids to take home. In addition to the candy they got a music CD that another church had recorded - it was inexpensive for us to give away - as well as tracts and invitations to the following year's VBS. HU gave us a way to incorporate the Bible into everything we did and the puppet show and Emty Tomb were really great gospel presentations. Plus we gave away more music CD's and an invitation to the 2007 VBS "Avalanche Ranch" with the dates it would be held. I don't think it will cost more than HU - we spent alot to build alot of the games for HU and we plan to reuse. Interesting side note - In our community Trick or Treating is becoming less popular with folks. There were those in the community asking "where all the kids were?" Others answered "I think they are all going to the mall (our stores pass out candy between 3pm & 5pm) and the "other thing" that was going on in town. That was us. |

| | We are doing Wild West Fall Fest this year as our Fall Sunday School Kick Off. Also, for the first time this year we are doing a tailgate party the evening before so we are hoping for good attendance by making it a great family weekend. As for HU, I just ordered the posters and trading cards and adapted the program for a six-week arc for Sunday School We do what we call "expression sessions" after the regular lesson and Heroes was a huge hit with the kids. Using the Bible stories from the trading cards, and free sources from the internet, I came up with crafts, songs, word puzzles and coloring sheets. I prepared binders for each child (we are a small church so this was pretty low cost for us) and each child had a trading card holder so they would add their card and then I added take home coloring sheets and/or word puzzles. We never told the children which hero we were doing until that morning - the kids could hardly wait for each week to come to find out about another hero. And, they could hardly wait until the last week when they got to take their binders home. |

| | It seems the biggest problem here (that I am reading) is the lack of attendance. Maybe we need some ideas on how to get the word out. We did not have the attendance we wanted either. However - we did have people tell us that they were so glad we did it Oct 31 (other churches did their things the weekend before). Part of the problem in this area is our newspaper does not give good advance coverage. It is a county paper, so covers several cities. They will post pictures and write ups after the event, but we need something before it happens. We cannot afford an advertisement that would draw attention. I am thinking... of going to Wal Mart, the grocery stores, etc., with several costumed characters and handing out fliers (with permission, of course). One of the churches in our area does a live nativity every year and they show up at Wal Mart (sometimes with the camels) the weekend before to promote it. Any other ideas? |
