Hey,

I am 15 years old and the Youth Worship leader of my church. We consist of 3 guitarist, keyboardist, and drummer. Also we have 6 singers including 2 which are guitarists. Me and a guy. This guy wants to be a worship pastor when he grows up. We all went through a complex tryout to be selected for the youth leadership team, we had to type our testimony, answer pretty hard questions in front of our youth pastor and others in the church, we had to commit to certain rules. I was selected for that position, he was selected for disipleship leader. For a while all was well between me and him, then something just snapped. Now I sometimes dread going to church on wednesdays just knowing were going to fight and argue. Not only with me but also with others in the band and vocalists. It's made leading worship difficult because so much time is consumed with him trying to get his way and making everyone miserable in doing it. He has said to me and to others that he could do my job a lot better and wished that he was the leader. He has also used bad language in discribing how i am to band members. He continually tries to make me fall. Whats funny though is that when the Youth pastor walks into the room, hes an angel. He doesnt want him to know how he treats everyone else so if i go to the pastor, I wont have any proof that he has seen. Hes not dumb. I am so tired of battling with him, Its taking away from what God wants to do with the band. I know we are not serving to our full ability. So, I have thought about asking him to step down for a while. So he can figure out why he wants to be a part of the band, how his life reflects to how he is on stage, submitting to leaders, being a team player and so on. What do You think?

Rad,

First, my heart really goes out to you. I have been in youth ministry for 12 years and I have seen many scenarios like the one you are mentioning here. It is a tough position you are in to lead worship and to lead others.

Second, I would advise you to tred cautiously but firmly. Saturate your decisions and life in prayer concerning this issue. If you have confronted him by yourself you might want to address the entire group concerning your privelage and responsibilty with leading others to the Throne of Grace through worship. The next step is to ask your youth pastor to appoint an adult to oversee the worship ministry to give some guidance to what is happening. While my students always led the worship, they were much more productive and worship minded with an adult to keep them honest.

Keep me up to date on the issue and let me know if I can be of any other help.

Hey Rad, so sorry to hear you're going through a rough time.  Even though it is a rough time, it can also be a great time of growth for you and the team.  Like Matt said, pray, pray, pray.  Pray for everyone on your team (especially the one who's causing difficulties) and for wisdom.  A wise servant once told me, it's those that you have the hardest times with that will be your greatest teachers.  I hated when he told me that, but through the years, I've realized that he was right. Dealing with difficult people often brought out the flaws in my own character and helped me to bow before the throne for help (always a good thing)... I asked for help in growing in my own walk and help for the situation.  Sorry there are no easy answers for this one, but I do think having an adult around while you practice (as Matt mentioned) may be a good idea too.  You might also ask the team members to take turns each week sharing a favorite scripture and spend some quality time in prayer as a group before you even begin to practice.  This always brought our team a lot closer (unfortunately we musicians can often have huge egos, so spending more time bowing before the throne, always helped us to leave thpse egos behind).  Hope this helps.

Hey, its rad again. Thanks for the resposes that definetly encouraged me, its nice to know that there are others who have gone through what I am going through. I actually sent him a note yesterday just explaining some things i was really concerned about. Mostly the part about him trying to overthrow my position and about putting people down about their gifts. I am a part of the student leadership team, there are 7 members. The worship leader, disicpleship leader, food leader, Missions leader, Camp leader, Publication leader, and also hospitality leader. We all are like the youth pastors help. The person causing problems happens to not only be in the band, but he is the disipleship leader. Hes constantly trying to take my place and he tells me that im a horrible leader when I am doing the best of my ability and am relying on God in my ministry. Well, i talked to my youth pastor about it and he said that hed meet with him and talk about it. I didnt really get to tell him about asking him to step down but he said he had felt God telling him what to do about it for a while so..
