Hi,
I enjoyed parts of your article but wanted to point out what seems to be a contradiction in the article.
I have been a music minister for over 10 years, have done children's ministry, youth ministry, and associate pastor duties and am a firm believer in excellence in the church.

I have always held auditions at every stage in the musical process. it is vital that we as music ministers remember both parts of that equation. We are ministers and thus should take care of each member and help them to become all out followers of Jesus. We are also the music leaders--which in the bible is a very important position that was not entered into by amateurs or those who were not willing to give their all. The team was made up of the same type of members.

We seem to be on the same page pretty much up to here. I am in favor of the choir for less talented singers it is a great place to learn and grow. I have seen people go into that area--take lessons--be diligent--and eventually make it as a main singer--it is all in the attitude and the desire to trust God with their ability and work hard. My main issue is with the thought that it is ok to send the ones who aren't "good enough for the main stage" to the children and youth departments. Why is it that Children and Youth are thought of as dumping grounds for immature people, substandard help, and lackluster musicians? These areas are the vitality, strength and future of the church--they should have the best.
It seems as if this is the pattern in most churches--even the ones that do a good job of taking care of the Children and Youth departments. Hand-me-downs, out of date sound systems, dilapidated computers--it just seems to be a pattern. In my opinion, it flies in the face of excellence. It is taking "the warm body syndrome" and forcing it on Kids and Youth. In your own words that is indeed the "kiss of death" for excellence.

Just wanted to present another side of this story--any comments are welcomed.
