This topic has been touched on in a couple of other posts - how to help our students get experience using the Bible, a still have a class?

In our community time, we have a "Bible Look-Up Table". It is an optional pre-class activity, that has a reward for participating. I write down the reference for the class text, or maybe several verses, and leave about 8 Bibles on the table. Sometimes with additional instructions, such as "highlight these verses" or "find the answer to this question". When they have looked up and read the verses, they get a candy. Teachers in the class keep an eye on the table on offer help when it's needed.

This has been hugely popular with the students! (I was surprised).
* The students who need a little extra help get it (not in the middle of class discussion).
* The students who are advanced don't miss out on Bible time because of the lower level of other students.
* Sometimes the students even help each other.

Of course not everyone participates - isn't that the point of Grapple? Make your own decisions. This gives them the chance. During class time, I reference the verses from the Bible Look-Up, and sometimes ask for a show of hands for those who did it (they like this). When I read the verses out loud, the ones who looked them up identify with them more readily.

thanks for the comments !

I think it is important to use bibles in class, I have some newbies who have no experience so we have a set of Hands on bibles so everyone is on the same page + they think they are cool looking. I find in this digital world even I have trouble finding passages these days. Much easier to use "Bible Gateway" etc. to look up the verses, and search.

I'll try some of the tricks mentioned

Our class has boy girl teams.  I have bibles on the tables if they didn't bring their's. During the lesson. when I need a verse looked up. Everyone gets a bible & they can turn to the List of the Books.  Then I tell if old or new testament.  I say the book, chapter & verse, ONE TIME!  who ever finds it first, the team gets 100 pts.  Teaches Listening skills, they learn how to use the bible.   The love the competition!

I like all the above.  One thing I do is make an index card for each bible verse we will be going over during class.  I hand out the cards before class starts and ask each student to look up their verse(s) before we start.  That way they are getting experience looking up verses and we are not spending extra time during class at each verse.

On Holidays such as Valentines Day and All Saints Day, I have created a matching worksheet where verses are on one side of the pages and the reference is on the other.  The students spend that class time (about 1/2 hour) matching the reference to the verse.  When done and correct, they get a treat bag.  Sometimes I will make it more detailed as to the treat such as, if you find this verse, you will get the empty bag to put your other winnings in.  If you find this one, you will get a small candy bar, this one a tootsie pop, ect.  They can then assemble their own treat bag based on correct answers.

I suppose making a match up list for each week's lesson and giving all students a limited amount of time (5 minutes?) to see how many they match before the lesson starts would give even more practice.  This will take time each week to prepare but well worth it for the kids.

We had our first leader planning session this evening. I handed out the nifty supply list and one of my leaders perked up and noted he really liked that the FIRST item on the supply list for every single lesson was The BIBLE.  Now, I LIKE that!!!!

Lucky for us, our early elementary SS teacher are doing a good job of helping children use their personal Bibles to look up the Bible verses in class, so I'm tickled that by the time they reach 5th grade they are able to find the scripture without much assistance.

Speaking of.... I need to send a note of appreciation to our early elementary teachers about that!!!!
