| | I think we've had this chat listed under other topics but for this conversation let's consider the differences in teaching methods to reach High School verses Junior High. I recently changed churches and my group is now mostly high school (the other church was Junior high). We have only a couple of Junior High students here so they're in with the older kids. They are frequently bewildered by the comments and can't follow the discussion. They definitely know they're on the lower end of the pecking order. I wish I had enough of them to do a separate class and aim the teaching directly at them. | I think lots of good stuff has been said.
I'm one of two youth ministers for a church plant, where we have about 12 active middle and high schoolers. When my co-minister and I started about two months ago, the group had long been middle and high schoolers together, due to the small size of the group. Obviously, you lose a lot if you only ever have 3-6 kids showing up for meetings, events, etc. So we've decided to keep the two groups together for now. They're used to it.
We think a lot could be gained by having a middle school group and a high school group, but we figure we need to about double our size before that's possible. The blessing of having two of us on staff now is that one of us could take middle school and the other could take high school when the time comes for the group to split.
But like others have said, it depends on the size of your group, the dynamics, and the resources you have available. If your group is as small as ours, though, I wouldn't split unless you have a really compelling reason to do it.
