Does anyone have a great idea for a Family Event this Summer?

We did something last summer that was pretty easy to organize and took very little effort on our part to pull off, but meant a lot to the families in the church.  We rented out a public park for an afternoon and had a good old fashioned potluck.  All we provided were some soccer balls and playground balls and Frisbees and stuff; the chicken for the dinner, and some ice cream cups for dessert.  The families that attended brought the side dishes and specialty desserts.  It was a good chance for the families of our church to realize it’s easy to spend time together and enjoy each others company.

We have done a family mission trip (all ages welcome), a family camp weekend, a “night under the stars” with a burger truck, a 50’s/60’s live band…a little family dance floor, etc., a western bar-b-que and rented a line dance caller, a car ralley, and we also have a serve experience that is on our website at www.rockhabor.org <http://www.rockhabor.org>   under the families area.  If any of these are of interest to you…let me know and I can give you more details.

If you are looking for a family event at your church, Group's VBS Jerusalem Marketplace is amazing. When we field tested it,
we did it in the evening, so that the whole family could come, parents, grandparents, cousins, children of all ages. Families really get into
character as they all go back to the Market place in Jerusalem, and really experience where Jesus lived and the fun of Bible Times.

There is a great Family Devotional Kit that comes with it, for Families to have as a followup in their homes.

Attached is also a document to use this same Kit for a ONE day Easter family fun Event.

A previous church used to do a great summer kick-off event that all our families loved. We'd rent the community pool for an evening--complete with lifeguards. Then we'd split up the alphabet for dishes to bring...a to h (side dish), etc. The church provided a main dish (hot dogs/hamburgers). All night we played fun games that got everyone connected. It was easy and not that expensive.

We do something in connection with the end of VBS. We have a Saturday or Sunday VBS Celebration/Ice Cream Social.  The kids sing the songs they learned in VBS and we have ice cream, goodies etc. Also in the past we have had inflatables in the gym or water activities outside.

We host a family picnic at a local park on the first Sunday in May from 4-6pm.  We rent a large shelter close to the play equipment.

The Church provides the ice, paper products, hotdogs, hamburgers and fixings. We get families to sign up to bring the sides, chips and beverages.  Our Sunday teachers do the cooking so families can enjoy playtime and fellowship.

I'd like to know some more about your "Night Under The Stars". This summer to change things up we are meeting in a local park on Sunday nights. Every week is a different theme. They are geared towards families. So far we've had an ice cream social, kite night (we are located at the beach so that was alot of fun!), and a family picnic. It's been such a nice change and we've had a great response from everyone.

Thanks.
