| I was thinking of letting my 2nd grader participate in a Science Fair in the area. Anybody have any good projects or websites we can check out? So far I've not come up with a whole lot. He is a smart kid, so really it doesn't have to be on a 2nd grade level. I've never done this before so I just need to be pointed in the right direction. This comes at a good time with PL!

| | Hey we must share genes! I have a smart kiddo too! My son did a few science fair prjoects in elementary school Depends on his interests.... My personal favorite was a hot air balloon he built out of tissue paper. I'll dig up photos. The thing was huge! He made it float by using the heated air from hair dryers attached to a base. The balloon was also tethered to the base so that he could stay on his allotted space. It was pretty dramatic when inflated and caught the eye of everyone. Also since it was too cold outside he needed to do it indoors (gym=tall ceilings). His presentation allowed him to talk about all the science behind getting it to float. I believe we used a kit from American Science and Surplus..and they still carry them You can make it from your own tissue but these were very large pieces that seemed like they would hold air better than the white wrapping paper. His personal favorite was a radio wave kit he built and presented.

| | We just finished two science Fair projects. Teachers were giving extra credit. Hear is what my two sons did One was a Mento soda rocket launcher. He develope this idea on his own. Problem too cold to get the rocket to launch. The last test the diet soda froze the cork they tried to help out with pressure to launch the rocket. he made the first rocket out of a water bottle and then qickly relized he had to make a slimmer rocket. My other son made a model of the human eye and wanted too see how many parts are too the eye. He had fun with it and in his conclusion he said test your eyes. We have also done ones on growing plants in the light and dark. Ones that get light and water . Some that don't get water . Then the same ones in a box that were not allowed any light. They had fun with this one. Also we have done one on bouancy. Using pennys to see how many pennys it takes to sink a boat . boat was made out of tinfoil and paper . Hope this helps God bless Doreen

| | one of my faverots from school was testing soil conditions on plants I got a flat or two of seedlings (this could be done with seeds two) and and poting soil. 2 pots were the control in poting soil nothing added then you do 2 pots with what ever you want to add to the soil ie used motor oil, salt, sugar, compost, fertilizer, gasoline, ect... Then you chart the growth of the plants I mesered them with a ruler every week. I also know that most libraries have a section on science projects. I just checked out several books to get ideas for power lab.

| | My son is also getting ready for the science fair (he's in 3rd grade). His school sent home a packet of resources and listed this website: http://www.sciencebuddies.com. It's really great! He found several he liked, but has decided to go with the M&M Survival Challenge. It will be hard to convince him not to eat ALL of the research! Good luck! Cheri in Indiana

| My daughter and I are currently trying to grow bacteria and fungi cultured from different places - hands, feet, mouth, dog's mouth, remote. It's a good way to learn about germs and why we wash our hands. What little boy wouldn't want to grow mold and bacteria as a way of determining the dirtiest places in the house?
Also, you can check out the sci-fi slime kit at Amazon.com, and they have some yuck or disgusting science kits as well. These may save you from the over-done volcano experiments.

| | My son is doing an odd experiement...lol. He is taking 4 cans of soup--2 Campbells and 2 off brand, one of each Cream of Chix, one of each chix noodle. He is creating a ramp and seeing if voume or density effects how fast it rolls down the ramp. Odd child. But the teacher loved the idea.
