| | We learned that a neighboring church is not doing their own VBS this year. We would like to partner with them in some way, inviting their kids to our Power Lab. I think they would send volunteers to help out, but we would want to stay in control of the planning and leadership. Has anyone had experience with this situation? Any ideas and things to consider? Thanks! |

| I have had a somewhat similar experience. We have a small church ourselves, but there is a even smaller church nearby. They share our denomination, but haven't had a VBS in years because of lack of help. We invited their church to come to our vbs. One lady called me and asked if we needed any adults to fill any spots. We can always use help and that year we were particularly shorthanded. I told her we would love to have the help. Everyone came together and had a great time. I just put these ladies where they had no prep work prior to VBS- they served as kitchen help, crew leaders, craft helpers. It was benefical to both churches. They have done this for two years now. I will see one of the ladies or kids out at town and they will say "don't forget to let us know when VBS is this coming year, or they might ask what the theme is." Just approach them and offer to invite their kids, most likely they will offer to help. Good luck

| | We also have a smaller church in town with the same denomination. They came to us a few years ago to ask if their kids could join ours (they had only a handful of kids). They also offered to help but did not feel comfortable in taking any leadership roles because they did not know our church building or how we did VBS. We put the adult volunteers in the crew leader positions. Their congregation also made the decision to make a donation toward our VBS. That was also a great help. Since they have been helping for about 3 years, last year I asked if they would like to take on one of the areas (crafts or the registration table). They declined. They did not feel comfortable doing this but wanted to continue as crew leaders. I would say that most people do not feel good about being a leader in another church's activities but do not mind to help. Send that church a specific invitation to help in the areas you would like their help (list the positions in your invitaiton). Let them know that the children are welcome even if adults don't step forward to help. As it happened to be, there were no volunteers from that church last year due to the week we held our VBS and my contact person felt really bad about it. I assured her that their kids are always welcomed at all our events and that we were blessed with the help they have given in the past. We do not feel that they are required to provide helpers so please don't feel bad when it doesn't work out. We will make sure to inform them each year of our VBS. I am sure they will help again when the week works out for them.
