| | Please take time to share how you are financially compensated by filling out the 2008 Salary Survey at Children's Ministry Magazine. Here's a direct link http://www.childrensministry.com/notes.asp The last Children's Ministry Magazine Salary Survey was publishing in 2004. After reading it, I handed a copy to the Chairperson of the Personnel Committeee thinking it was interesting data. It was the first time I'd ever read anything about how others were being compensated. Frankly, it's not something we talk about because financial compensation is NOT why anyone accepts a call to ministry! Low and behold I got an unexpected substantial raise the following January. The Chairperson told me that the survey wasn't the reason for the raise, but the data from the 2004 Survey helped justify raises already under consideration. I've been waiting for the next one ever since. I understand the result of the 2008 survey will be published in the July/Aug Edition of Children's Ministry Magazine.

| | I'm so glad to hear that the survey helped you. You are correct that none of us does what we do for the money. I already answered the survey but I'm afraid for where I do the Lord's work isn't going to change the compensation. I am a part time children's ministry coordinator who co-ministered with another person. This person left the job 2 1/2 years ago and I took over her oversight of the midweek program. I was given no compensation for the extra job. Just prior to the departure of this person, the church called a new senior pastor. The search committee did a salary survey as to fair compensation for all areas of the church. The only position deemed to be noticeably low in compensation was the role of children's ministry coordinator and they shared this information with the people in the church responsible for salaries. Since then I have twice asked for a raise noting the added responsibilities from taking on more work as well as the low salary in the first place for the position. I have been turned down every time. I fortunately do not need the money but I do believe fair compensation is always in order. Obviously, the only reason I'm still there is I believe God has called me to the work and I've not ascertained that I'm to move on yet. I love the kids. I have more than adequate funding for the ministries I oversee so they seem to deem them important enough to fund. I am female. It may or may not play a part in the reason for my salary but the youth leader is full time, male and compensated, with housing and benefits, almost 4 times my salary. I have total freedom to lead children's ministry as I see fit because the corporate body wants it. Every so often the lack of compensation gets under my skin and irks me but the joy I have in the work and the lack of micromanaging of me by anybody gives me total freedom to serve the Lord as I feel led. It's been a wonderful time of serving the Lord and growing in my personal walk. |

| | Hi Mal - It IS an awesome job and those of us with loads of flexibility and congregational support see that as unmeasurable compensation. I spent 10 years as a full time Realtor@ so I've had my pressure cooker job with big $$$ and would rather do this than ANYTHING else... no regrets! As someone with a spouse who makes a decent income, I feel privileged to serve! (I joke sometimes and call my spouse my benefactor!) Seriously, I wonder how many marvelous people turn away from Children's Ministry as a vocation because they simply can't afford to live on the salary provided.
