Hi!

I'm a seasoned VBS Director and have used Group's exceptional VBS materials for many years ... LOL ... that makes me sound really old!

To get to the point - this year we are considering doing a weekend VBS format instead of a full week program.  Has anyone out there had any experience with a weekend VBS?  Running Friday, Saturday and Sunday?

Any and all scheduling and station ideas would be a blessing!

Lisa R.

A few years ago we did our VBS on a Saturday/Sunday. Overall it went ok, but we decided not to do it again. If I remember correctly, we did day 1 and 2 on saturday morning, day 3 on Saturday afternoon and day 4 and 5 on Sunday morning. It was a LOOOOONG weekend. Most of our volunteers were so pooped by Saturday afternoon I didn't know if they were going to come back on Sunday! The kids got tired too. We found by the end of saturday that doing 2 sing and plays and 2 finales was just too much, so on sunday we combined sing and play to teach day 4 and 5 and did all the rotations for the two days with a break in between and then did one finale. I don't think our Day 4 point was made as well doing this. And it required a lot of changing of the script for our leaders when we did it this way. I remember suggesting to our church that we do day one on Friday night, Day 2 on Saturday morning 9-12), Day 3 on Saturday evening (5-8), and 4 sunday morning and 5 sunday evening. The weekend might still be long but at least there is a long break in between. One big problem I see with this is kids not showing up for the second event in one day, as parents might not want to bring them back, they get tired at home. It reminds me of the way some churches do a morning and evening service on Sundays though, so if you really want to try it, I suggest it and then just push the importance of attendance so the kids don't miss out on anything.
