This is my first time here on this forum and my first year directing VBS. I was on the planning team for many years, but this is my first time running the show myself so to speak. I also run our Religious Education program and only work part time, so I feel very far behind. You all seem to have been working on this for a while and I am just starting! Our program is in June and I am just looking at my stuff and trying to recruit helpers.

Any advice would be helpful and very much appreciated.

WELCOME HEATHER!

I just joined last February .  You came to the right place.  This forum helped me a lot.  Purchase the kit and get your station leaders 8 of them is the first step to go.  Of course, this journey will make you fall down to your knees and pray, pray, pray for God's provision

Nice

Well Heather, the most warmest welcome to one of the most creative, loving and supportive corners of the web. Yes, many of us have been here forever! Yet many are new like you, but together we form a community of like hearted people who want to share the love of Christ with children of all ages. You have come to the right place for ideas, encouragement and most importantly prayer. Everyone has something to contribute and that is what makes this place so valuable. Just take time to look around and ask any question you may have. We are here for you. I pray you have the most rewarding experience doing VBS this year and that this board contributes to your success. I will be praying for you. God bless!

Heather, I'm new like you!  I've been so amazed by the ideas generated in the forums.  I've just recently "got the job" directing VBS and I feel like after a week or so of lurking around the forums and then jumping in with both feet that I can safely say I'm ready to tackle this.

Hope I can provide some help for you and look forward to your feedback as well!

Welcome!

Welcome Heather! You have come to the RIGHT place! This is an amazing meeting of people w/ hearts for the Lord, and, of course, for children! Everyone here is SO helpful...you will find tons of ideas!!!!!
The first thing you need to do (after getting your starter kit) is to set a schedule for your VBS and line up your helpers. Showing the recruitment DVD may help w/ this. If you have a budget, you need to determine what materials you will order, what you can borrow, what you can ask for in donations. Do you have a ballpark idea of how many kids you can expect? That will help you plan accordingly. My best suggestion after all of this is to DELEGATE! Don't try to do it all yourself....you have many talented people in your church...even if they don't know it yet! You (and they!) will be surprised by what they can and will do. Visit this board frequently...even if you don't do everything you see, often, the posts will give you ideas that will work for you. Above all....PRAY! The Lord has a plan and HE will direct you. I will be praying for you, too. Blessings as you do His work! Kimberly

Heather, I am it sure it goes without saying that the best place to start (and end) is with prayer. Commit all your plans, ideas and desires to the Lord. He will do a mighty work when you trust him for all things. One more thing, don't allow anything or anyone to discourage you. Thnigs might not run smoothly all the way, but can have a great impact as long as we are consistant and focused on the reason why we do what we do. Show enthusiasm in all you do and let your passion be evident. For many, that is all they need to see. It's never too early to start planning, yet you do not have to feel overwhelmed. Group has the "Easy VBS" downpacked and you can always tailor the program to your specific needs. Not sure how? Just ask away!

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome.

I do have my starter kit and have started to recruit helpers so I guess I am off to somewhat of a start. I just worry because I have never done this before on my own. I am making big changes in our program and hope they are received well. You see, I took the job of a woman that retired after 22 yrs as director so I have some big shoes to fill.

Hi Heather,

This is my first year also. Never been in this position. But Group made this curriculum so easy that you will look like you are a pro!  Just follow closely the instructions in the manual and pray for unity among the leaders you recruited before you meet with them. Familiarize yourself with the whole material even the stations to give you an idea.  It really works!

Devour this forum - ha ha ha.  Get all the ideas in every station to be on top of it all.  This eliminates a lot of time of brainstorming too long for small details.  Like I got the ideas of the crew names from this forum and listed all of them.  I just presented it to the leaders for votes.  I was still open with their suggestion but it really cuts time.  Plan out already your room assignments and all other improvements that you can think of (of course with the help of the forum people again) so you have something to present.  Its just giving your leaders options.  This saves a LOT of time in your meeting and preparation for the whole thing.

Take one day at a time.  Create a timeline like April is focused more on recruiting, acquiring supplies, etc.  You will enjoy yourself!  This forum is contagious so be prepared to work with excitement cause you will!

Nice
