I was wondering if anyone has any successful family night ideas.

We are currently offering Parents Night Out every month. I want to expand it to offer a family night every other month in trade with the PNOs.

I would appreciate any creative ideas or successful times that have worked in your ministries.

Thanks for your input!

We recently had a family Game night that was a huge success.  It was very simple to plan and the families had a great time.  We set up several tables for traditional table games (families were encouraged to bring their favorites to share) but the most fun was the interactive games we had planned.  Each family was a team and we played "Win, Lose, Or Draw", "Don't Forget The Lyrics", and "Name That Tune."  For the music oriented games I used many songs that the kids sing or play games to during our worship services and included old TV/Movie tunes for the adults (The Flintstones, Mission Impossible, Gilligan's Island, etc). I had small gift baskets for the winners of the interactive games.  Each basket contained the makings for a family movie night ($5 Blockbuster gift card, popcorn, and candy).

Everyone had a wonderful time and immediately started asking when we could plan another one.

I really like the game night idea -- we might have to try that next!

We have had two familiy nights using Veggie Tales' materials. The last two movies they've released on DVD have been available to churches prior to their release in stores.  We purchased their kit for $14.99 & that included the movie, a couple of promotional posters, stickers, coloring sheets & activities that went along with the movie.  At the event itself, we played games (I adapted the activities that came in the kit) & did crafts for about an hour.  Then we showed the movie & served popcorn & drinks.  We were able to get large trashbags of popcorn from the local movie theater for $20 or free & then we bagged it in brown paper bags so we could serve "real movie theater" popcorn.  We also asked families to bring blankets & camping chairs so they could sprawl out in the gym & be comfortable during the movie.

It was fun & I would definitely recommend it.  To find out more, go to www.bigidea.com & click on "churches" at the bottom of the page.  You have to sign-up to be a "Big Idea Partner," but that just means you get access to free stuff & can buy the family fun event kit.

We have family nights once a month. We call them Family Fun Fridays. We have done a variety of things:

-Princess/spa party                            -cooking nights

-treasure hunts                                 -a fishing trip

-water games                                    -hawaiian night

-game nights                                     -building night

-movie nights                                    -family outings

Each evening is designed with activities that children can do with their parents as well as their friends. We usually open with prayer and end with a short devotion connecting whatever we did with the Love that Jesus has for us.

I usually pick a theme and then search the internet for fun and easy activities to fit the theme. One of my favorite sites is www.familyfun.com

Another thing we do that our families seem to love is Family Kickball. We play once a month on a Sunday afternoon. There are very few rules: no keeping track of outs or score; switch outfield/kicking after everyone has kicked; only fouls on big kids. (hard concepts for little ones) It is fun, crazy and a great time for parents and kids to fellowship. No sign-up or commitments, just come if you can.

Blessings!
