| | Hello all- I am going to be having thyroid surgery on May 19th to remove my gland (thyroid). It is a 2 hour surgery, kept overnight. I'm more concerned about the whole medicated for life result. I know God is in control and He has been SO FAITHFUL to our family in the last few months. However we are my husband & I are on state care that is due to end in the next few months. With health insurance costs being so high, we're not sure what we're doing, but are looking for options. The thyroid controls everything from appetite, to heart issues to hormones & more. The medication is not optional. Please pray for a smooth surgery and provision of care after. Also pray for my 2 young boys. We haven't told them as it would really upset my 5 year old. He is very sensitive. Most of it will occur while he is at school. Thanks everyone! I really appreciate it. Luckily it won't interfere with our VBS (August) Thanks for your prayers. Kate

| | To encourage you--my husband has been on thyroid medication for 28 years now and it doesn't slow him down nor is it too expensive--I believe now they even have generics for it. Pray God will remove your anxiety and your surgery and recovery goes well. |

| | Hi, Will say a prayer for you. I had thyroid surgery in 1981 and have gotten along very well since then. Within just a few days I had much more energy. I didn't realize how bad I felt until after the surgery when I felt so much better! It wasn't until after I had a child, 2 years later, that I needed to take the synthroid medication. The doctor monitors the levels once a year. Mine has only been increased slightly once in 27 years. It's a small pill taken once a day on an empty stomach. I used to take it in the morning but a few years ago had to start taking blood pressure meds which interfered, so now take it 2-3 hours after lunch. Some people take it at night before bed. It is flexible that way, but does need to be the same time of day once you decide what works for you. I get tired and irritable with a headache if for some reason I don't have the pill. Thankfully, it isn't costly. I know the surgery is much easier now and the scar will be hardly noticeable in a few months. Your bandage will be small enough that your 5 yr old shouldn't be too concerned. Hopefully these comments will give you some peace. Rest in God's love. Meg |

| Will be praying for you Kate and trusting that the Good Physician will help you through the surgery and bring a quick recovery.

| I just had thyroid surgery on April 17th because I had suspicious nodules that came back indeterminent on the biopsies. I only had the right lobe removed but it was still a 2 hour procedure. They kept me overnight to check calcium and parathyroid hormone levels, since they have to move the parathyroid glands during the surgery and need to make sure they are still working before they discharge you. The worst part for me was the surgical tape he put over the incision and stitches. It was really tight and itchy for the 6 days until I had them removed. The incision is only a little more than an inch and is healing very well. I use Mederma cream 3x a day to help the scar as recommended by my surgeon.
My 2 year old was very wary about hugging me and still remarks "no more tape, Mommy's all better!". My 8 year old was very concerned about the surgery and my 5 year old was OK with everything.
As far as meds go, I had already been on levothyroxine (generic levoxyl) which for my insurance plan is $7 a month. If you go on the generic, I think it is part of the $4 prescriptions at Walmart, Target, etc. if one of those is convenient to you.
I'll be praying for you to have a good outcome, like I did (so far, so good!) If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

| | All- Thanks for your encouraging words & support. The more I talk to people, the more I meet those who know someone who or have gone through this procedure themselves. Thanks for your prayers and encouragement. Kate
