| | We're planning on doing the spice shop -- having the kids grind the spices w/ a mortar and pestle and then make little sachets. I'm having a hard time determining how much I need for 300 kids, though. Does anyone have any suggestions? It's difficult, too, b/c a pound of bay leaves is a lot, but a pound of corriander isn't that much . . . |

| | I had the same question! Like if I buy the pack from Group, how many kids does it cover? It it the same amount that's in the starter kit? God Bless, Matt

| | The packet you buy has about twice as much as the one in the starter kit. It is still too expensive to have that for each child...for us anyway. We are going to show the kids what Frankincense and Myrrh are and we bought some annointing oil. It also is expensive. We will teach about the granules and how they are added to oil etc. I have a mint plant, a dill plant and plan to try find others. We will talk about how they tithed dill, and mint but forgot the best part. We will let them use the mortor and pestle to grind up some spices such as cloves, dill and mustard seeds. Our sachets will have rose petals and probably cloves in them. I will be interested to see what other's are doing with this shop. So, fill us in on any suggestions you all have! | I'm not sure how to respond to this -- but I've done the spice shop twice, so I feel like I should be able to! I'd start by doing a search for "spice" here on the webboard and reading all the posts. I know there were several last year and you may find some helpful info there. You're right about a pound of bay leaves being a lot. It's really hard to judge on some of them, though. We average about 100 kids at our VBS and I know I never bought more than a pound of anything and we had leftovers. We bought most of our stuff from Atlantic Spice and I know I just bought an assortment of the less expensive spices. So much of depends on precisely what you're doing with them and what kind of quantities the kids will be using. This will sound weird, but if any of you are remotely near any Amish communities and you feel like you need to see the quantities you're buying, make a trip to an Amish bulk food store. Their spices are far, far cheaper than at the grocery, or even Wal Mart, and they have a wide assortment. It will be worth your drive. I happen to live in the midst of the world's largest Amish population, so I'm at a decided advantage on the spices. Atlantic Spice was cheaper on a lot of things, but the local Amish stores gave me the option of re-stocking without busting the budget if we ran out of something.
