Hello all you beautiful posters!  Our church does the final night of VBS a little different.  We invite the whole family to attend, and we have the VBS kids do a concert for everyone.  This will be followed by our Wacky Science Professor and his assistant doing a Science Demonstration on stage (probably this one where a chemical reaction turns water blood red then another chemical reaction makes it clear again, to demonstrate the cleansing power of Jesus' Blood).  This will be followed by a short gospel message given by one of our pastors.  After that we all have pizza, and then we are going to have a Science Fair for the rest of the evening.  We are thinking of setting up different booths (similar to what most churches do for their Halloween/Fall festival's), but we want them to be scientific.  So we'll have some basic games, like a bean bag toss (but make it an "atom" toss or something), and then we'll have a few stations with hands on experiments for the kids.  One of our helpers is a Science Teacher, and he has one of those static machines that make your hair stand on end when you touch it.  Anyway, we are just starting to toy with this idea, and we really want to have booths that reinforce the theme of each day.  Like a fun booth that has to do with thankfulness or bravery, but also has to do with science.  Can you guys let me know if you think this is a good idea, and if you have any thoughts to share, I would be so grateful!

Dear Sarah,
I must say, this is and AWESOME idea!!! I'm going to mull it over and see what I can come up with - it sounds like something that would work well for our church as well. We usually do a carnival - but instead of game booths, have science booths - possibly some games mixed in as well. Definately the giant bubble mix in a kiddie pool and the "walk on water" from Steve Spangler.

Check out stevespanglerscience dot com.

Thanks and Blessings, Janet

Great idea!  We are doing a lock-in on the final night of VBS, then the next morning at 10am the parents will come for the "concert" and pick-up.  I like the idea of our pastor speaking briefly.  At the lock-in we are going to have some sciency things (ie feel & guess what's in the box, bubble magic, walking on water because I know they'll love it, and a few other things).

Great Idea!  I think for your "Bravery" booth, you could have mystery items that the kids have to touch without seeing them.  They have to be brave to reach in not knowing what is inside.

I agree with everyone, wonderful idea!  Normally we have games for the kids to play - like a raw egg toss, 3 leg races, etc.  I was going to cut them out this year because last year the kids didn't listen to directions and it was just a free-for-all.  Now I'm thinking we'll save the science experiment games for our Friday night bbq.

Love the Bravery Booth Idea.  We have made a lot of progress on this idea since I first posted.  WE are going to have a ton of gack and goo that the kids can play with.  We also have a super bouncy ball they can make.  We are looking to have a few sciece teachers who attend our church set up their own booths, we'll see how that goes.  We'll also have a fishing booth where the kids get creepy bugs and spiders in a little ball.  We are going to run the Spotlight Drama on a loop in the corner for all the parents to see, and play the music cd in the background....it should be a blast!

We are going to do the skit from Group's website with adults, show the cinema science show and then move outside.  Outside we will have ice cream, science type activities and the coup de resistance -- slime the pastors and directors.  We will have a drawing of some sort for the kids to pull the cord to slime the individual.   Our kids did this at school years ago and it was a great hit.
