| I want to begin visiting my students at school. However, I'm not sure how to go about doing this. I know that I need to contact an administrator for permission. I know that schools are already on alert for safety and I don't want to add to their concerns. Any advice? Also, would you even recommend going to the schools? Every one that I have talked to seems to think that it is the best idea for building relationships. I have always used the approach of going to ball games, taking them to play sports, eat, etc.
Any advice?

| | Josh, I do agree with the majority of your friends that take the position of it being a great idea to visit your students at school. There are some steps to help make it a little easier...1)Check with your students to make sure they want you to come to their school to have lunch with them and their friends. 2)Check with the school to see about the rules and guidelines for pastors visiting schools. 3)Determine your motivation for going to the school. | Background: I'm 26 and am a missions/outreach youth pastor at a church in Greenwood, IN.
At first, I didn't think it was a good idea, but recently I've had some students request that I come and eat lunch with them at school. I'm pretty new to the church (8 months) and didn't think the students would like it. But, like I said above, if the students want me--I'm going to go.
My thoughts about it actually being outreach...I don't know how effective it will be. But, I think it'll be a great tool for me to be seen by their friends and better the relationships I already have.

I'm not sure that outreach is my intention in going to the schools. I'll certainly be open to that, but I'm trying to find ways to spend time with my students and to learn more about them on their turf. I don't want the students to think that I have some type of agenda when I visit. I just want them to know that I care about them.
How many times do you visit the schools? Do you go to both middle and high school?

| | Josh, As the students see you loving on your kids you can be assured it will have a positive affect. As far as which group you visit (junior high/high school) depends on what your responsibilities are. If you are ministering to both age groups then you would want to try to balance them both. | | It is great to be on the schools. I have a complete open campus at one of our local middle schools. I first volunteered as a coach for the basketball team, and now am seen as a partner in helping students. I think the key is to come onto campus with the mindset of how to serve the school, administration, teacher, etc. and then doors open up. I get calls now if they need extra help for lunch duty or whatever and if I am available I am always there. My students love it cuz I usually bring pizza and we get to hang out and talk, which doesn't happen during our midweek service. Be creative and go for it!!

| | I am a 20 year old Youth pastor, and visit the High School and Middle School every Friday to have lunch with some of our teens. It is always way more fun than expected, and the kids really enjoy it! In order to do so, we had to be added on the Teen's "Emergency Contact Card" which required the parents to call the school, but after the first week or so, staff starts to get to know you and look forward to your coming. Two suggestions I would make, first, never go alone always bring someone with you (Who should also be on the contact list or known by the school) and second, from time to time bring lunch for the kids like pizza or burgers, it really makes 'em light up! |

| | A Youth Pastor visiting teens for lunch at school is something I've never heard of before. My first thought was that it would be weird but I'm glad to see that you all are having success with it. Another idea that really encourages the teens is coming to one or more of their sports games. Let the teens know to give you their sports schedule and make an effort to come and encourage/congradulate them at one or more of the sports events. God Bless, Josh T. in Ohio
