Need to get this to work or will have to skip it for tomorrow night.  I tried the powder and it flopped.  Just got slush- nothing that wouldn't fall right out of the cup.  How much water do you add to the 1/2 tsp.?

I checked the book and it really does not say how much water. It says a 1/2 teaspoon of the powder. A back up for this is you put water in a balloon and blow it up into a small round shape. Get a volunteer, talk about trust and while holding the balloon over their head, push a pin or needle partly into the balloon. They will not get wet unless you remove the pin.

Yes, I had the same question. The instructions seem a little confusing. It says to put the expando powder into the cup, then fill the cup half full of water.

Later it says to pour water into the cup.

Does it mean to fill a different cup half full of water, then pour that water into the expando powder cup?

I don't have my expando powder yet so I can't try it. If someone has been successful, it would really help if you could post how much water you added to the powder (and when!)

Thanks!

I did this last night.  I could only use about 1/2 cup to 3/4 cup of water to get it to absorb quick enough for the effect.  Skip the clear cup it suggests, the kids can clearly see the stuff in it.  You can use a clear cup to pour the water from, though.  I had the kids shout out the things and poured just little splashes into a red cup with the powder for each thing they shouted.  Once I had all the water in it and while holding the cup, I told a drawn out version of breaking my leg and having to ask Jesus to help me be brave.  Trust me, it takes an extra minute to get it to absorb.  I did this 3 times last night and the second time when I turned the cup upside down, some of the stuff came out.  Instead of turning it completely upside down, just turn it on its side as if you are wanting to pour from the cup.  Just don't hold it there very long...hope this helps.

I did this today and it was FUN!!! I kind of re worked a few things in the script, but basicaly I had them shouting out their scary things while they were linked together swaying to create the storm. As they were shouting I poured in 1/2 cup water into my cup with 1 package of the powder in the bottom. I used a clear cup and continued walking through the crowd swirling it vigorusly over their heads. They saw the water get high - almost out of the cup. As soon as I saw the solid form - it was obvious when it did it's thing. I paused over a group leaders head and tilted the cup just over half way. The gel stayed and the storm (the kids) suddenly stopped. All 3 times it worked this way - it was way too cool! Then we talked about through the power of Jesus we can stick together like the gel to face anything. They really loved it! I really just wanted y'all to know what measurements worked for me - eventually. The first time it was obvious that I didn't have enough powder and I had to scramble to add more - I just told the kids that the storm wasn't big enough yet and they had to get louder. I needed more worries and fears to fill the cup. My Jr. Helpers thought it was part of the script!

BTW - I've reworked all the Chadder's Theater scripts to better fit in my 20 minutes allowed, and would be happy to share just PM me.

Expando Powder is the same as Slush Powder (used in magic kits) and California Crystals found at florists.  Our florist has kindly agreed to give us a few ounces!

If you are having trouble, use DISTILLED water because not all tap water is the same.

I was testing this today with 1/4 cup water and 1/2 teaspoon of expando powder.  Our tap water is very hard.  It took several minutes to gel, and then slid out of the cup when turned.  When I used distilled water, it gelled much sooner (about a minute) and did not slide out of either the clear plastic cup or the coated plastkic cup.  WAY better.

I am going to pour from a clear plastic cup into the paper cup.  In a clear cup, it is so obvious as to what is happening that I think it will take the element of surprise away, especially from the older kids who will be looking for the "trick".
