The new harp version looks much easier for the kids to do. What other type of materials would work good if we did not want to use the rubber bands. Some of our younger 3 to 5 year olds may have difficulty in stretching the band.

I tried making the harp that came in the starter kit, and it actually took me about 20 min.  I didn't feel like the little balsa wood pieces were cut very well, and therefore weren't very easy to put together.  Also, once you get the whole thing together, the noise it makes isn't anything close to "music."  I also agree about 3-5 year olds having a hard time with it.

Good to know that this craft is really hard!  And the price doesn't make it any more desirable!

God Bless,

Matt

We plan to use the harp craft, but we will have them paint it before they put their "strings" on.  We will do the assembly ahead of time for the little ones and let the older kids do it all themselves.

Here's another idea for a music instrument craft.  Go outdoors and find twigs in the shape of a Y.  One Y per child.  Get lots of variegated yarn.  Have kids wind the yarn completely around the stem and both arms of the y.  Then cut one piece of yarn and tie it to one end of the Y arm.  Thread beads, washers, anything that will make noise along the yarn and tie it to the other arm of the Y.  Presto, you have a colorful rattle.  I did this with a group of 4-5th graders.

I have a harp kit from the original JM in 2005 -- it came in my starter kit.  If you can use it, it's yours for the cost of the shipping.  Please email me at thelovedays@sprintmail.com.

I found this really nice Harp to make. Not expensive-probably cheaper than the kits -
just needs some prep work drilling holes
I had all the supplies I needed in the basement and whipped one up pretty quickly.
I think it will make a craft that used long after VBS is over!

Keep scrolling to get to the bottom of the page. There is a great idea for drums also.

We did the harp craft, and to my and the shop keepers surprise, the kids had no trouble doing it!  They even got it done going into the shop only once!  We used water color paints and they turned out great!  Goodluck!
