We used tubes that transport fluorescent light bulbs. Capped one end, drilled a hole in the side, attached aquarium tubing, and an aquarium pump. We then put water w/ food coloring in it and dropped dry ice in it periodically. GREAT effect.

We also had access to a smoke machine used by our local fire department for training. It's the one they'll use in the small house to teach kids how to get out in a fire. We do a countdown each morning and afternoon and set it off. Very cool.
