We did the suggested craft for the weaving shop.  We had a lot of little ones, ages 4 to 6 years old.  We needed a lot of extra hands in this shop to get it done in one session.  Would be great if you could have an extra day in this shop, but you really need some extra hands.  A great spot for youth to help with!!

I have found that a few crafts were just too hard for the little preschoolers to do.  They were great crafts, but we needed extra hands in some of the shops to help.  Thank goodness we did!  But, if you haven't done your vbs yet, and you chose to go with the suggested Group crafts, have extra hands for the basket and weaving shop!!

But needless to say, I loved the marketplace shops this year!!

Hi Everyone,

We just finished ours JM. and we adjusted the marketplace a little so that the matzoh cover and the baskets were done. The kids were allowed to go back to the shops to finish crafts. The Dreidel and bambo flutes were finished in a day. Jerusalem was great because we were able to adjust time and shops each day if need be. Some of the tribes had parents and other did not. We were able to use middle and High school kids in the shops. I do suggest that at least 3 in these two shops. We also learned that if the younger children under the age of 8 try the reed baskets, and became frustrated with the project. That they did not wish to try the beginner basket.  This was our fisrt year doing Group for VBS and we learned alot.

In Christ love,

Tax lady

When we have done it, we didn't assign kids to any particular shop on any particular day.  They could just go where they wanted.  So many took two days on baskets or other projects and that is fine.

I have thought of doing that, but I really want the kids to experience all the crafts.  They are just so wonderful.  Plus, they get to meet all the shopkeepers.  Anyway, that is a thought for the future!  We aren't done with HLA yet!!!  We are looking forward to next yeaar!

The first year (BV) we tried letting each tribe go to whichever shop they chose. I thought it was a fine idea, but the tribe leaders were adamant that the second year we needed to assign shops. So last year I did up a schedule so each tribe got to each shop once during the week. I had them go to 2 shops each evening. Since we had 10 shops, 8 of the time slots were for specific shops, and 2 of those time slots were "free time" when they could choose to go to the barnyard or farmer's market or both. Of course, anyone who finished in their assigned shop early ended up in the farmer's market anyway! This year we plan to do the farmer's market even tho it is not in the book, and we will make that, the candy shop, & the barnyard "free time" options. The candy shop will have candy already made, not for the kids to make. They will get "paid" for their time as apprentices in the other shops, and have to "buy" the candy or other food, plus pay the tax collector & can give to the beggar. I don't know what to do if they don't finish the weaving or whatever in the allotted time! We just don't have enough time slots to accommodate going back!

We are doing Jerusalem Marketplace for our Wednesday program. For the most part it has been pretty good. But I do have to say that I was really surprised at how hard the crafts have been. So far our class has not been able to do one by themselves. I am having to do most of the craft for them. We really have been disappointed. We use Group a lot for our Sunday class but I will do a lot of research on crafts next time we do a VBS program for Wednesdays.

For the weaving shop, we bought our own material at Wal-Mart (from the $1 & $2 rack).  We cut 9" squares for the smaller kids, and 12" squares for the older kids.  For the strips, I used a ruler and traced both sides of it, making the strips 1" wide.  My class is middle school and up aged and they did well with it.  We used tape to attach each strip, so they wouldn't fall out while the kids were weaving, and then used Elmer's glue to tack both ends of each strip later.  Our strips aren't nice and straight as the one's from group, but they still looked good when they were finished.
