| | As Craft leader I try to have enough for youth helpers. They love them as much or more than the little ones, and get too few opportunities to do that kind of thing- growing up too fast. Occasionally if I'm afraid of running short, I ask them to wait until end of day and check back with me for leftovers, and they are always understanding. We have equal amounts of retirees and teens helping. It is my faviorite thing about vbs! |

| | We encourage parents to stay and set up a "cafe" for parents where we provide snacks, information about the church and staff it with volunteers who can try to answer questions. Its a good way to connect with the parents. We do our vbs at night so a lot of parents stick around. |

| | Our VBS is in the evening and our church is in the country so we have some who travel 20 miles or more to bring their kids. If they are not needed as volunteers we have a table or two (inside or outside depending on weather) where they can visit. Usually something comes up where a few need to help with food, recreation, or be an extra crew leader. Or to blow up balloons, fill bags or prepare something for closing. People are always willing to help, but also are fine just hanging around visiting. I have always felt the fellowship of adults at VBS is as important as what we do with the kids. As far as teens go we've had some show up we don't expect and it was a bit frustrating but it is good they want to be involved. This year 2 families from the community came with some kids of VBS age and older siblings. We officially called them assistance crew leaders but they participated in everything just as the younger kids did. One 15 yr old boy had a tender heard during the Day 4 Finale. Our church camp was the next week so we raised $275 for him to attend and there he accepted the Lord! Likely if he'd not been allowed at VBS this would not have happened. A lesson to me to be flexible with the rules. Blessings, Meg |
