| | Well it is one week until our vbs and can you believe it but 7 of my volunteers have 'decided' that they really don't want to help and now I am stuck... Our congregation is older and we only have a handful of able bodied folks to actually help... With it being this close is there ANY other way to tell the story instead of doing the drama in the marketplace???? I would hate to just say forget it after all the work we have put into this, so there has to be some way we could incorporate the storytelling instead of the drama isn't there???? I am at wit's end here... I have everyone else lined up to help in the different areas and I pray that they don't back out on me too... My family (me, husband and two boys) and another two families are the only ones with children, so we mainly do it for them, and I don't want to just say "sorry but we are not having it this year because so and so decided to back out". Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated... Thanks for ANY and ALL help!!!!!! Margaret in NC |

| | Hi Margaret, Why not try having the kids "overhear" a conversation about the story from a couple of the shopkeepers or towns people. Each day it could be a different bit of "gossip" for the kids to pick up and talk about. Another thought might be at tribe time. The tribe leader could alert the kids to "happenings" in the Marketplace and have them look for people to talk to about it. The shopkeepers could add bits of the story as the kids progress through the Marketplace. I hope this helps. I'll be praying for you. |

| | First of all, I am so sorry as I know how much pressure and stress this can cause. Deep breath... take a walk first and tell God all about it. Ask Him for His will to be done, not yours and feel His peace as you submit to His plan...whatever that is. Here are a couple quick suggestions, but I don't know your area so not sure how they'll work: 1) Go back to the entire congregation and let them know from the front how excited you are about this wonderful evangelistic outreach. Tell them that due to cirtances there have been some staff that can't participate and you are desperately in need of more volunteers. 2) Find Youth in the area - in ANY church....and solicit their help. Youth are AMAZING leaders and this program is definitely geared toward all faiths. Blessings & keep us posted! CHarlotte Hermiston, OR |

| Here are a couple of ideas:- Have people who are doing other jobs double up for the dramas. We always do this. The dramas are short and simple, so this isn't a huge burden. And the kids rise to the occasion. We've never had a confused or angry child point to a shopkeeper and say, "Hey -- you're supposed to be a shepherd!"
- Get on the phone and start asking people directly to participate in the dramas. Explain that it's one of the most important parts of the program and that it will really only take about 20 minutes of their evening. We all hate have to make those calls, but sometimes we have to!
- If you have a supportive pastor, ask him/her to help call people to this ministry. Sometimes people will tell us "no," but they won't tell the pastor that!

| | We added 15 minutes to our program, and utilized tribe leaders and shopkeepers to the max in our dramas. We wrote our own dramas since we did not really think the dramas provided hit the scripture hard enough. I would be glad to share them. They are short and simple, and straight from scripture. We did this immediately following the first tribe time. A few of our older gentlemen who would not have been willing to be 'actors' were able to be narrators 'off set'. In other words, heard and not seen. This worked wonderfully for us, and we intend to do it this way always. In prayer for your VBS, Beth |

| | We did Galilee by the Sea two weeks ago and I had a similar problem. We had enlisted people who weren't involved in other parts of VBS and provided them with parts early so they could learn their lines and practice. The week before and even on the first day more than half said they couldn't do it for various reasons. We ended up using a mix of our teenage helpers and shopkeepers who had to read their lines from the scripts - several hidden in baskets or costume arms. It worked out fine. I certainly would have preferred memorized lines but the kids still enjoyed the dramas and seemed to understand what was going on. Everything else was fantastic! Good Luck. Linda |

| | Just had to fill everyone in on my 'huge problem' from last week... We decided to go ahead and do away with the drama part of it and with me being tribe leader, I could read the story out of the Bible, let the kids use props to 'act' it out as I went and then have the Rabbi reinforce the story in his class, the shopkeepers reinforced it there too and the Roman Guard to add bits and pieces of the story as well.. It has worked out AWESOME and with our small church we had 36 Sunday and had 39 or so tonight.. Praise the Lord!!!!! The music has been a hit and so has the different kinds of Bible foods.. All the shops have been open and I had so many helpers that some just stood around and watched... I can't tell you how worried I was last week, until I put it in the Lord's hands and look how he has blessed our vbs.... Thanks for ALL the ideas and advice I get here on this site.... This is my last year as director, but we already had a lady volunteer for next year so looks like we will be doing the 2009 marketplace theme..... God is so good!!!! Only 3 more days to go...I will try and post our pics when we get done........ Margaret in NC |
