Here's a post from a new second grade teacher. Let's continue to keep each other in our prayers! And share our needs!

winkHello to all.My name is Tina and I'm new to this site. I will be teaching Sunday School to second graders for the first time in June. I'm posting to ask for any tips on how to do this. I realy want to do it and let God use me. However I have never taught before and iM very nervous about it. So Im looking for advice, tips or whatever you may have to offer. Most of all for your prayers that God will be lifted up in these children.Thank you

Tina

And we offered her some tips:

Tina, thanks SO much for taking on the joy and responsibility of sharing your time and love with these second graders! May God bless you and your time with them! A couple of tips for you:

- make sure you read over the lesson completely before class. I'd suggest you do this at least several days before class, because that way the Bible Point/Key Question becomes part of your thinking, and you can see how it applies to YOUR life that week. When you can share within the lesson some of your own experiences, that helps kids see how real the Bible is for today, and how it makes a difference for our lives today.

- do the lesson as it is written. That doesn't mean your goal is to get through EVERYTHING in the lesson. We try to provide more than you need for your time with kids (and you can find another idea each week at the Teacher Tips section of www.faithweaver.com -- for each age level!). So check to see how much time you have with the kids, and then look at the "A Look at the Lesson" for a summary of the activities and approximate time each takes. Then select which activities you want to do with the kids. Make sure to include at least one Getting Started activity, at least one Bible Story Exploration activity, and at least one Bible Application activity. Just make sure to follow the teacher guide and use the words and questions provided. Over time as you grow more comfortable and understand the uniqueness of your class, you can certainly add your own style to the lesson. But our intention is to write the lesson in such a way (and we've tested it!) that we know it works--which helps you to be successful!

- finally, have FUN!smile If you are excited and enjoying what you are doing, your kids will be excited too. Be willing to try new things. We provide a variety of different kinds of activities to address kids' different learning styles and interests. And be willing to try new activities!

God bless you in your ministry. And let us know if we can serve you in ANY way! We're praying for you!

Blessings!

And from another:

I've taught 1st and 2nd graders in Sunday school for two years now and absolutely love it. I get a blessing each Sunday from these children.  At first, it was like work.  The more weeks I taught, the easier teaching became because the students and I got used to each other and established a routine. I would definitely have a snack or small candies around to use as incentives. This often keeps their attention (when they know that the good listeners or those who volunteer and answer questions get a treat.

And from another:

I like to go over the material on Monday of each week. That gives me a full week to pray about the upcoming lesson, gather materials, and think things over. Usually a neat idea will pop into my head at some time during the week that always seems to work out well. God is good and he will provide for you, especially for those serving the children he values so much.
