I fringed the bottom like you suggested and then put beads on it.  Also, I found different shaped brass fasteners at JoAnn, stars, hearts, squares etc. (40%off) and the bag looks great.  The children will really enjoy being able to personalize their bags and I don't have to worry about the boys thinking it's a purse because they can cut off the fringe and omit the beads.   Thanks for the idea.

I'm glad they worked out. I haven't been able to get some to try it out yet. I am going to go to the thrift stores and ask them to save any "unsellable" jeans for me. I know some of the thrift stores get donations and either throw out or pass along items that don't meet their standards or are in poor shape.
My only problem is the times the stores are open I have trouble getting to them to ask.

Maybe this will work for those of you that can't get enough donated jeans. Also that way I won't be buying cheep jeans at the thrift store to cut-up when someone else may need them to wear.

mari chin, can you post a picture with the fringe and beads please?  I guess I'm picturing fringe that looks more like thread and I can't follow how the beads hold.

We are attaching the strap to go around the neck, because their name tags will be attached to the pocket.  When they arrive and sign in they will get their name tag on a yarn string and put it around their neck.  Then when the come to crafts they will remove it from the yarn and attach it to their jean pocket using a fastener.   I poked holes in pocket where the strap will go in.  I also poked holes where they will put the brass fasteners.

hope that helps,

marichin
