I still need to confirm with my DRE, but I think we're going with directly listing a donation request on the registration form in addition to "passing the hat" at our closing family event.  The church I am modelling our program off of does this succesfully each year.

I actually see registration and payment being separate as a benefit...

1a.  we plan to ask for checks to be mailed to church marked "VBS" and it will go into that acoount.  vbs volunteers won't be "saddled" with tracking payments, which i think helps keep vbs fun.

1b.  perhaps folks will register earlier because they can do the payment later

2.  folks who can't swing it don't need to ask for assistance, they do what they can

3.  slight potential to come out ahead.  i'd like to improve our seed money for next year just a little bit (we only have enough to buy the starter kit)

So my bigger concern is... what's the going rate?  We plan to ask for $30 per child.  My thinking has always been, "You mean I can send all three kids to the same place, for 15 hours, for more fun than any camp they go to all summer for ONLY $90?!!!"

But a few folks I have chatted with just are put off by the whole idea that everything at our church comes with a price.

I'd love to hear some thoughts on this!
