Anyone out there working with children or youth in the inner city? I am the fine arts coordinator at a rescue mission. We work primarily with black children and youth and their families. I am responsible for drawing CONSTRUCTIVE creativity out of the students we work with. Our programs are being blessed and more and more students keep showing up! I am always looking for people with whom to share ideas. Just wondering if anyone else out there is in the same boat!

Strategies for Educating African American Children by Judith St. Clair Hull in the Teaching For Spiritual Growth Series is an excellent resource.

Wow...what a blessing! We are a small church, that is predominantly black. My husband is the preacher. We do outreach programs 3-4 times each year and invite the children from our local homeless shelter. We also invite them to VBS. We are about 20 min from NYC, but it sure feels like big city to me (I'm from a rural small town in PA). What I have found is trying to spend a few minutes individually w/ each child seems to help them to bring THEIR best. It is hard in a large group, but esp during VBS week, I really get to know some of these kids. We are always happy to see them again at another outreach later in the year, but of course, that is bittersweet, b/c it means they are still homeless. We also found that you can't feed the Spirit if the body is hungry. Some of these kids were actually stuffing snacks in their pockets as they were helping to prepare them. From that point on, we began serving a light supper during our VBS. Having a full tummy also helped to reduce acting out behavior. I will be praying for you and your programs! kimberly
