I am the Minister to Children at a growing, rural church in South Carolina. We have very limited funds for spending on decorations, etc. for our children's classrooms. For years, every room has been painted white or beige and our children find them boring. Children's classrooms can't be distinguished from the adult rooms and are almost sterile looking. It has taken much prayer and lots of talking, but I've finally received approval to paint our preschool department and our elementary children's classrooms if we do it ourselves and raise our own money.

Now, I need ideas, especially for the elementary rooms. Our team has talked about putting up a wall mural of the world in the entry hallway, then painting each classroom to represent a different country where we do mission's emphasis during the year. For example, the 1st grade room might be China and have a mural of Chinese culture on one wall, with the other 3 walls painted in complimentary colors. This class would then spend some time at the end of the class to study about a missionary to China and learn about the Chinese people.

We would like to hear other ideas before we get too deep into this. We have to cover 6 rooms, 1 for each grade from 1st - 6th graders, which all have a wide range of likes and maturity levels. This is something we've never done before, so we are trying to raise the money to buy paint, etc. Any fund-raising ideas would be appreciated as well.

Blessings and Thanksgiving to God Our Father!

We've published a few articles in Children's Ministry Magazine that might help.

We hired a decorator for one article and she completely transformed the room. The article is "While You Were Out." Here's the link to it.

Send us your before and after pictures when you're done!

You may also get some inspiration from the theme ideas (they are not mission-related) we have done with Group's Living Inside Out. You can read from other churches in the Decorating section of the Group's Living Inside Out forum at http://forums.group.com/Forum84-1.aspx, or on the website itself at http://www.groupslivinginsideout.com/decorating.asp.

Hope that helps!

A lunch after church on Sunday would be a good fundraiser.  Our Youth group has done well with this.

I own Rock Creek Candle Factory and hand pour soy candles if you are intersted in selling anything to raise money.  The candles are excellent!  I have done several fundraisers and the most recent one 30 cheerleaders made over $3800 for their expenses.  I offer 50% profit on everything you sell.  If you would like more information, you can go to www.rockcreekcandles.com or I am available as well.

I also teach 4th-6th grade on Wed nights and am desperately seeking ideas to decorate the room to accomodate girls and boys.....I'm beginning to think it is going to be IMPOSSIBLE to please both.  Let me know if you get any great ideas!

Good luck and God Bless!

I am currently working on decorating our 4th-5th grade classroom.  I agree with the bright colors.  I have fabric for curtains & bulletin boards in red, orange, gold, green & blue.  I'm leaving the walls white (to pacify some) but I'm thinking about adding some blacklighting.  Our Discovery group (3yrs to 5th grade) also uses this room for lesson & singing on Sunday nights.

We decorate each classroom quarterly to coincide with our curriculum themes.  We do whole wall decorating, floor to ceiling (and sometimes the ceiling). We got rid of bulletin boards about 13 years ago. Now when kids walk into a room, they feel like they are in a palace, a rain forest, whatever.

We recently painted our hallways. go to www.painteroffun.com for some ideas. Check the gallery first. You can order transparancies from them. We did this and it is awesome.

One part of the rotation model of Sunday school is decorating the spaces children use, so there are TONS of pictures of decorated and painted classrooms in the www.rotation.org.

Here are a couple of pictures of rooms at my church:

God's Canopy Storytelling Room

Temple Tales Drama (& multipurpose use) Room
We used two shades of brown and sponge rollers to create the texture of the rocks, and then went back over and added in the "mortar" between the rocks later. It took 3 of us about a day and a half to do the hand painting of the mortar lines... and at the end of the second day working we were sick of mortar lines in general and brown paint in particular, so an arch way with a desert scene inside it appeared You may also notice the cross on the back wall next to the closet doors? We thought it would be fun to conceal some Christian symbols in the rocks as an added point of interest, and the kids LOVE hunting for them when they go in there. There's the cross of course, plus a fish, a sailboat, a loaf of bread and chalice, and a Bible.

At the end of the room with the closet there is now a stage with curtains, and cup hooks up by the ceiling, to allow us to hang backdrops when we want to.

Created by the Spirit Art Room
This room is still in process - it now has little valance curtains of a novelty fabric that has VanGogh's Starry Night and cows jumping over the moon, and will soon have a Bible verse about creation stenciled on the wall as well.

Decorating a kid's or teen's bedroom can be a tricky task. we need to find a balance between colors, bedding and accents. The best way to start decorating a kids or teenager's room is to start by choosing your kids and teen favorite Cartoon characters.
I remember when I was looking for my children bedding. I preferred on their favorite cartoon. Like for my son I chose his favorite cartoon Bob the builder and for my daughter Disney Princess. Which I select from from Charcater comforts. That make them to sleep early and which effects on their all day.
