ok I got too excited and so I couldn't wait.. so here...

This are the dyes I used

This is all the pages that I cut out

This is the finished project, the kids will be able to decorate them and there are about 8 sheets of paper but we could put as many as we wanted. I tied it with a cheap rope that I had around the house but would love to find some skinny dark twine to make it more rustic... but any kind of fasteners would work, I would think...

These Journals are 4"w x 4.75"h

I just wanted to add a quick note that I too liked the idea of the prayer journal, but did not like the offering from Group. Having just studied about Lewis and Clark in our homeschool history and seeing the journal they had, I looked on the internet and decided to try a mini leather covered journal. The cover is an 8" by 3 1/2" piece of leather with 5 small sheets inside. Kids could later add more sheets as they fill the first up. Punch a small hole in the cover and use a piece of leather cord or lace to wrap around to hold it shut. I want to find a western concho or button to wrap the cord around to keep it closed. Since I am working in mini, it should be cost effective. I hope to buy the leather on ebay, but I found the leather cord at a local big lots that was 15 yards for $1.00 (which we will also use on the buddy bags to hang around the neck for each child). Hope this gives others more choices.

Those look great! I love the leather look. Makes it even more authentic. I may have to step in and suggest this to my craft director. Thanks for sharing the idea!

We made our own Bible books for ST out of fun foam and the plastic spiral binding stuff.  The kids decorated them with stamps and markers.  I really like the looks of the books with the twine binding though, looks great.  When I was walking through Hobby Lobby I came across stationery with a bandana border.  That could be cut in half and attached to chipboard and then used for the cover/back of the journals.  Or you could use western themed material and a fabric stiffener or adhesive.

Shannon,

Your prayer journals are awesome. You said you were looking for small conchos to tie on them -- S & S has small conchos 1" to 1 1/4"  at 108 for 19.99.  Don't know how many you need, but they might work.

http://www.ssww.com/search/?v=conchos

Hope this helps.

Lera,

Wow, the concho's are just what I'm looking for! Thanks. The cost will still fit in my budget!

I also love the pryer journal idea but want something that can be kept.  So I purchased the canvas book cover on clearnace at Ot 3.99 for 12 and the kids can decorate.  We will give them a cheap 5by7 notebook to put in.  Then after they have used that they can replace the notebook and will have the cover for years to come.

With prayer,
Lynette
