| The VBS we're helping with will be July 9-13 and I read through all the materials before but did it again yesterday. I was trying to visualize the set up. I also went over each day with my husband (Mtunga, to you who are familiar with him.)
We wanted to see what materials we needed to be accumulating and if we thought we needed all the tarps called for.
For day one we are thinking of forming an enclosed area with black plastic for walls and running segments cardboard of 2 1/2 to 3 foot tall all around the bottom, like a low wall. I think some of the Bible time roofs had low walls around them to keep people from falling off. The black would be the sky beyond the wall. We might add some stars and maybe a "moon" for light. We would make this whole area the roof top and not use any tarp walls. We would need flax for the spies to hide under and a few plants and some laundry around. Maybe a drying rack with Bible time clothes hanging on it. That would be about all that is needed.
Day 2 we both had misgivings about. Water, no matter how deep, does not start at ground level and go up when it is in a river. We have a long piece of blue cloth that we think will make a good river. We'll just lay this out on the floor to be the river. Then we plan to cut it at one point and rig a section that can be retracted with a pulley system so that it will pull back and expose a section of dry riverbed with the rocks available to be gathered. This water that was flat on the floor, over the rocky section will rise up to the ceiling or near it, by the pulley system, right against the wall. You've seen pictures of the water, having stopped running, standing up and this is what this will do. We will have to tweek the script to follow this but can be pretty much the same. We're thinking some plants along the far edge and maybe a few trees forming an area where the sound man could be hidden and where water can be squirted on the kids from while they pick up rocks or something. Maybe a backdrop on the wall of butcher paper if we get ambitious and the marsh entryway and that will be it.
Day 3 we really couldn't come up with any good ideas for. You don't really want to see the walls of Jericho because they are suppose to fall down, but you only act that out with the kids and no wall will fall. We may march the kids out in the hall and then in to see the Colonel or have two areas divided off someway as stated. Still thinking and looking for good ideas on this.
Day 4 we also didn't think we needed a wall made of a tarp. We will need something to have the "sunrise" light shining behind, maybe a big rock made by covering the piano up. Then we just need to make a cemetery with some trees and plants and an area for the fireplace. We thought we could maybe make a paper backdrop as well with bushes and trees and whatever painted on it to add depth and could indicate that the women who come to the tomb are behind those trees. Then the lighting for the balloons "rock".
Day 5 we'd put a sign on the door and then have the inside of the room the clinic. Maybe a table and a shelf unit. If you were artistic you could paint a scene of beds and patients on the wall. Maybe you could have a couple of cots with fake patients in the room somewhere. It could be simple or not so simple as someone else pointed out. We think it will be pretty easy too. Mtunga thought he might use a tarp as a wall in this one if needed.
That's about it. What are some of you thinking of doing? We're finding this new format harder to use. Is there a place for todays messages like the old format had? We may not understand all the features, but it seems so broken up that it is hard to see what all is happening without a lot of clicking around. Are we missing something?

| | Hi Judy, Thanks for sharing your ideas. I agree that the new boards are harder to use. You can go to the top and click on 'Recent Posts' then 'Posts Added Today'.

| | We're also struggling with Day 3. I just had an idea, and I don't even know if it would work... but what about suspending the drop cloths (for the walls) in a circle from floor to ceiling? (Maybe on a large ring????) Then the kids could march all the way around it seven times and it would drop, like a magician's trick. I'm not even sure how you would have this happen! LOL Just an idea. We didn't do Serengeti Trek for the community VBS a few years ago, so we may just build the wall with bags. Hey, VBS is still two weeks away, right!?

| | Merigold, Great ideas! I've been a little disappointed not to see many detailed discussions on WBA for this year. Still are deciding on how to set up as well. The couple running our WBA had to drop out about 3 weeks ago and I'm still having trouble finding replacements. I really had hoped they could take it and run with it. Now I've had to turn my attention back to it. Our class rooms have no inside corridors, so I plan on setting up 2 quick set canopies right in front the of the door and clip the canvas tarps to them to create an "extra room." for day 1--extra room will be setup as stone interior of Rahab's house with plants, pots, fruit & bread, table chair, etc. Rahab will greet the crews outside the house , bring them through the house and up to the roof. The regular room has a step up and then the kids will be on the rooftop. Not sure how that area will be. I like your idea Maribel of the sky and roof line. Maybe blue tarps for sky and cardboard roof line with one stone wall for the gate. Then I will cover some couch cushions with burlap and tie them with string for the flax. A few plants and then the bundles of laundry. Day 2--could use the blue tarps again for sky, the river I don't know yet about the river, a pulley system would be too much for us now. Our vbs is in 3 weeks! Probably will use the blue tarps again for sky and then do the river as the book suggests unless other ideas come in. Day 3--Will have the seargant meet the kids outside the "extra" room and march them around and through the extra room inside to the regular room where the Colonel will be. Maybe use camoflage tarps for an "army tent". Our guys will be dressed in modern combat gear, not biblical. Day 4--blue tarps again for sky, maybe one rock tarp for tomb and then a rock for the spotlight as well. Trees and plants for garden and campfire. Day5-- "extra" room will be setup as a doctor's waiting room and then the regular room will be the exam room using the stone tarps. Our doctor will be dressed in scrubs & lab coat. I will have medical charts on the walls, a table set with some display pieces I found cheaply on ebay of a heart, brain, foot, etc. and maybe a cot or two if I can find them. Hope to hear from more of you on your ideas.

| Peggy can we pin this discussion to make it easier for everyone to find?

| | Thanks for that tip about how to get to daily posts. That helps a lot. Is there a way to see the post of the person you are replying to while you are replying? I have trouble retaining all the information I want to respond to. :-) Merigold |

| Peggy,
That's an interesting idea about the round tarp that falls down. That might be a little harder than some things. :-) I like the idea of using the paper bags. We thought of that too, even though it was done before it was pretty cool. I'm wondering how you would fit it in with the kids making kids stacks (what are they called? lol), and falling down themselves? Merigold |

| This is Roger's station, so I'm just relying on what he said.... He's just not comfortable with the kids falling like that and wants to replace it. We are on tile floors, not carpet and have large groups. So it could get a little dangerous. We're trying to come up with an alternative!

| That's too bad about your people having to back out. That adds unneeded stress for a director.
It's good that you will be able to have an added on 'room'. That will help. Our own church had an extra room and a circular stair way that worked for a lot of things. Alas, this church has a narrow hall outside the room we will be using. The step up is a good idea. I wonder how we could do a step thing into the room without too much trouble? Maybe like a stile, over a fence, just go up and come back down, just for effect. lol
I would never have thought of using modern costumes for day 3, but the kids will like it. Thanks for sharing. Merigold

| | I see. I thought about kids getting hurt too. I'm not sure what we are going to do yet. Hard floors would make a difference. I think we have carpet. We need to go visit our room. We wanted to yesterday, but the director and her family were moving to a new house when I called, and they also had had to take their oldest little girl to the emergency room because she had a swing collapse and drop her on her tail bone and it was hurting real bad. Not a good day to add anything. Merigold |
