I am thinking about having our preschoolers make sock stick horses but I have never made one. I found a craft website where people have offered a pattern but unfortunately the website isn't taking new members so I can't contact them to request the pattern. All that said, have any of you ever made a sock stick horse before and if so, would you share the instructions?

Pattern for $5
Another pattern for $1.99---good clear picture of finished stick horse

Ooh wait.... I think I found something
Stick horse directions
Things required: ( Just hunt around or ask your mom for these things which will be easily found in any household )

An old sock

An old glove

Two buttons

A broomstick

Cotton wool (low-quality) or old discarded nylon stockings.

Now you are ready to begin...

1. Stuff the sock full of cotton wool or old nylon stockings.

2. Push the end of about a metre length of broomstick well up through the stuffing. Tie the opening at the cuff of sock to the brook stick.

3. From the glove cut off 2 of the fingers. Stuff with wool and sew on for ears.

4. Sew on button for eyes and fasten strips of shoelace/ribbon/leather (whatever is available) for bridle and reins.

5. Paint on nostrils and teeth.

Now you are all set to gallop off...!

I would try this with a PSer first.  I've made stick horses and you really have to stuff them TIGHT in order to get them to keep their shape.  Seems like something pretty complicated for a PSer to do!

I found this pattern http://familyfun.go.com/arts-and-crafts/sew/feature/famf88fantasy/famf88fantasy4.html and I have 3year old and we are letting the PSers do this.  We are going to stuff them an dlet them devorate with markers and stamps, etc.  we are also talking about getting PVC pipe and cutting it and making a cover to keep cost down.  but old broom handles will work too.

With prayer,
Lynette

That blue jean one at Family Fun is adorable.  And it will surely be much bigger than a sock version.  How many can you make me?

The family fun blue jean horse is very nice.  It's a good size, pretty easy to make.  I've done 3 with 3 to go-just for deco.

I am having trouble keeping the jean from slipping off the stick when I just type it on the stick.  Any ideas?

Could you maybe add a couple of screws to help hold the horse on?  Maybe one up under where the head bends down and one at the bottom under the tie.  I'm glad you tried this out ... makes me want to get these done, too.

we made some w poster board in the past. It is a pattern where you cut it, then assemble and decorate.

Lynette--thanks for the post.  I've been looking for this off & on for the last few months.  I knew I'd seen it before, but for some reason could not find it when I searched Family Fun.

If the horse keeps slipping off the stick, how about using tape to make a ring around the dowel just above where you're going to tie it off?  That will catch the rope before it slips off but still be hidden inside the horse's head.

For preschoolers, it might be easier for them to stuff a flatter horse head made from felt. I think this guy is adorable. He's actually a miniature, made for a doll. I think you could simplify him more by making his mane and ear a part of the head, like these other three, which are really tote bags. The mane could be fringed with scissors, or the kids could glue on a mane from precut yarn pieces. And I actually kind of like the abstract look with the flower and heart stickers. Maybe you could get foam stickers to go along with the Bible point for the day.
