I just found this forum and I love it, but my head is spinning reading all of the posts, so I apologize if this has been covered.  I noticed everyone is using styrofoam, which I understand is better for painting.  Last year I used cardboard for all my cut-outs and they all started to curl.  I was wondering, what you all were using to cut out the letters and all the detailed edges of the styrofoam.

There are many different tools available!  I have a CHEAP soldering gun that I use for big chunks or rough edges.

Then I have a tool that I got at Hobby Lobby that is basically a long wire that gets super hot.

There are more expensive hot knives that some use with all sorts of wonderful attachments.  And some folks use an old fashioned electric knife!

Kathy posted this on another thread.

They sell Tuff-R at Home Depot and I imagine at other places too. It has a foam core with a covering on it. It cuts cleanly with an electric knife unlike the foam formed from "beads". One of our members works at Home Depot and brought in 10 sheets of slightly damaged for free. http://www.dow.com/styrofoam/na/res-us/products/tuff_r.htm

I bought Tuff-R and let me tell you even a sharp steak knife cuts through this thing like butter without leaving any "beads" or any dust behind whatsoever. It is great. I just finished a rearing horse and will post pictures this weekend. This sTUFF is great! Check the link above in Kathy's quoted post for more details.

Yes, I have been using a steak knife as well. Works great! My 13 yr old has been cutting out most of our stuff.

I made some building faces from Tuff-R about 4 or 5 years ago and they have stayed nice and straight through several uses and transformations

Kathy, your talent amazes me!  If you aren't doing VBS next year, how are you planning to use all that talent that He has given you?  Your church has been blest!

Kathy, those buildings were amazing! And to know that they last that long makes this sTUFF a good investment.

Your decorations were beautiful especially the buddies. I like the way you added the scene setter background to them. I noticed you did the same to the AR buddies. I already glued mine to heavy cardboard. Do you think I can still get another piece, cover it with the background and glue the buddies to it? Will that work

Hi Kathy and any other Tuff-R experts,

I went to Lowe's (my Home Depot did not carry) for Tuff-R and I'm ready to get to work this weekend.  I have 4 ft. paper copies of the buddies (we have a huge printer at work) and I want to make them look like cut-outs.  Need advice:  do I glue the paper onto the foam and then cut both the paper and foam out at the same time?  Or do I cut the paper out first, trace around the foam, cut the foam, then try to match the 2 together?  Then my other question is in gluing:  do I glue it to the blue/foil that is on the Tuff-R board, or do I try to peel that off first?  HELP!

I bought a styrafoam hot cutter which I'm hoping might work on this Tuff-R since I want to try to cut as close to the edge of the figure as possible.  Not sure that will work.

Any advice is very appreciated!

Debbie K

I am sure Kathy is more experienced on this one, but I will tell you what I did for one of my buddies. I cut the buddy out first (left about 1" white around). Then I used spray adhesive to glue it unto the blue side of the board.* Then I cut around the buddy. Again, this was done with a new steak knife. It cut clean and easily.

*Note- I sprayed both the poster and the board and waited about 30 seconds before positioning.
