We are doing nacho's with cheese dip on day 5 we found the kids loved them last year for fiesta so why not do them again since all as it requires is a dip. Other than that the rest of the snacks looked pretty good this year.

Snacks worked out wonderfully!  We did just like the books suggested, but didn't have a preschool to fix the snacks the first day.  Oh and we used marshmallow cream instead of icing for the smores.  mmmmMMMM!!!  The snack ladies were a little freaked out by day 4's (today!) snack - the ice cream sundae kits.  I guess they didn't get the concept at first, but then they got it and it was the favorite snack so far, plus the groups had to use team work for their snacks to come out right.  We're a little curious about how the kids will like the snacks with apples & cream cheese tomorrow... but I bet they'll love them.  Group does a great job with choosing snacks.  I suggest doin it by the book!

We kept most of our snacks the same, changing up only a few minor things. On Day 5, we did not feel that the kids would eat the cream cheese concotion. So, our much less expensive and kid-friendly option was coolwhip mixed with dry jello (cherry) and graham cracker sticks for them to dip. Our kids loved this snack, but most of our adults did not care for it at all. I thought it was good, though! LOL

On the Jericho Wall day (day 2??) we did not serve pepperoni with the cheese and crackers. We added 2 more crackers to the kids plates with cheese. Big hit!

All of the snacks went over well, but certainly the ice cream was the best! Kids LOVED LOVED LOVED it! The s'mores were a close second!

We used pudding cups instead of ice cream and the ladies had a BUNCH of leftover icing from Day 2 and mixed it in with the cream cheese!  The kids loved EVERY snack and ate them all up.  The apples were a huge hit and they had enough to have a big bowl of apple slices during our picnic lunch and the kids ate them all!

Our snack leaders chose not to do the s'mores on day 2. They used rice cakes, cream cheese with raisins stuck on top. It did not go over well at all. Most of them ended up in the trash. Day 3 alot of the younger kids didn't eat the pepperoni, and today we discovered that alot of the preschoolers did not like their food mixed. The leader, instead of the ice cream, used cups of applesauce with crushed up graham crackers with a strawberry on top. I get the whole concern with the sugar issue, but I don't think that some sugar is going to hurt them. Stick with the kid friendly ideas and maybe add a healthy side with them, such as carrot sticks or apple slices.

Just my 2 cents.

We changed day 5 to raw veggies (carrots, celery, green peppers, broccoli and pea pods) with ranch dressing.  It was a huge hit - probably a bigger hit than the ice cream cups - or maybe because we let the kids have as much as they wanted !

The day 5 snack did not go over too well with the kids or the snack leader. At least half of the kids hated the cream cheese dip. I walked by as one little guy about 6 yrs old took a scoop with his apple and was almost in tears as he exclaimed this is yucky! The snack lady said the milk was too hard to incorporate into the cream cheese and had to drag out the food processor to get it blended properly. She has been our snack lady for several years and was not happy with this one. For all the work in preparation it was disappointing that the kids did not care for it. My son (he was a crew leader) who likes pretty much everything said it was Ok but could have been much better. The apples were fine but if you have a tastier and easier dip recipe I would suggest using it.

The ice cream as written in the book was a huge hit with everyone. For the S'mores we used marshmallow fluff and it was a hit too. The snack helpers did not like the sticky mess but the kids totally loved it. The trail mix tasted really good to me but some of the kids were not very interested in it and just picked.

He who works his land will have abundant food, but the one who chases fantasies will have his fill of poverty.
