I can't remember where, probably in a Group magazine, but I read "Whatever you do, stop doing popcorn prayer." What do you all think of popcorn prayer? How can we shake prayer up so that isn't something that puts us to sleep? What places does communal prayer hold for us?
This past week I took the teens to three locations around the church and used each one as a topic starter for prayer - then one individual prayed. It seemed to work okay.

In Youth Group, usually one teen prays before the lesson time and we also have our "prayer teams." They're broken down into Junior High Guys, Junior High Girls, Senior High Guys, Senior High Girls so the members in each group can relate to one anothers prayers and personally pray for someone during the week if lead to. Each group has a notebook that we write down all of the prayers for that Youth Group time and the next week we go back and see if any of those are answered. Everyone volunteers to pray for one or two things on the list and we go around in a circle and pray. It works great!

In the church I am at, it is the culture of not just the youth but the adults to not pray aloud, it just mortifies them.  However, I have a great deal of success of introducing what I was taught as "African-style" prayer.  In this method everyone pray aloud at once.  The youth are willing to do this because there voice becomes one of many, and they are no longer worried about how other people percieve what they say.  When we do this everyone is praying for the same thing so this method of prayer is both individual and communal.

I like that idea! I really do! I've been thinking that I need more prayer in my youth group and it is sad, the adults in the church don't pray. Everything is so dry there. Please, if you can spare a prayer, please remember to pray for my church. Thanks.

In Christ's Service,

JP

I don't know how much this will help you, cause its not really making prayer more interesting but at my youth ( backdoor youth church ) we just pray in a circle and everyone prays for everyone. Its really cool cause first it gives us a chance to debrief everything going on in our lives cause we talk about what people need prayer for first, and then we start with the person to the right of the pastor and go one after another. I don't know, it seems really simple but I really love it cause we all just pray for each other right in front of them. It really creates a sort of family atmosaphere because we are unashamed of people knowing that we care or are worried about them. Its a total attitude of love and no judgement at all. When other people are praying we are all listening and praying with them cause we recognise that our brother or sister is hurting. I don't know like I said before its pretty simple but it means a lot to us to be able to be a part of something so intimate with God, together. But our youth group is really different from most and we really are a family.

miss loo,

I totally understand what you're talking about. One time in our prayer group we just prayed for the person to the right of us and I thought it was very personal and meaningful.

Hi. I thought this might be a useful starter for your group and help young people to engage in prayer for themselves, their friends, their community, their nation and the world. 'People of Prayer' is a creative evening for young people using simple activities and visual prompts. I wrote it some time ago and used it several times. It usually works really well. You can check it out on my blog Insight. You'll find other free stuff and ideas there too.
