Hi all,
Thank you for sharing all your pictures and ideas. I couldn't get through VBS without all of you.
I am making the foam mountains in the decorating DVD but I don't wan't to use all that PVC pipe and have no room on stage for all the large plywood.

Do any of you have an creative ideas other than hanging it from the ceiling?

thanks in advance

I haven't seen the decorating DVD but I thought the mountains were just big 4x8 sheets of foam.  If not, pay no attention to this post.  Is your stage such that you could just lean them against the wall?  Otherwise, if you could run a wire across the stage, anchored on the side walls with an eye hook or something similar, the foam boards could lean against that.  How about leaning against ladders turned sideways?

They showed the mountains elevated but in many of the pictures you can see that most did not do that and they looked better than the DVD.

My husband builds easy wooden stands for that type of thing (like my stables). If you like I can post a picture of one of them.

Thanks, Kathy, could you? Our stage is shaped like a baseball diamond. So I cannot set the foam sheets up in a straight line, not enough room. I have to offset them a bit. Thank you for your help.

I use music stands behind them and duck tape to the stand. Works very well.

We have duct taped ours to long tables and folding chairs in the past.  Get them lined up and leaning against something...then get the duct tape rolling!  This is a good job for 2-3 patient, detailed people!  Usually takes 1hour+ or so, put it's an important job!

Make stands for them from the foam board itself. Cut a piece that is straight on one side, wider on the bottom and comes to a point at the top (visualize a triangle, draw a line vertically from the point of the triangle to the bottom, dividing it in half).  I would make them a minimum of 4' tall and they may need to be taller.

Duct tape these to the back of the foam board.

When we did Bethlehem Village we made a different stand for our hills. Cut a piece of foa, about 3-4' tall and 3' wide. Score a piece 1' wide in the center of the board. Fold the two side pieces on the score. Use spray adhesive for foam to attach the middle piece to the hill. The piece on each side stuck out in the back and held everything upright.

We use a couple of cement blocks, one in front and one in the back, and that holds up the pieces GREAT.  Since the foam doesn't curl or weigh very much, it's very easy to do.  The great thing is we have a church member with a barn full of them so if I need more, I just trot over to Lee's barn and grab some!  (Free is always best, isn't it?)

Peggy,
Thank you for the suggestion of the cinder blocks. Turns out my neighbor next door can get them at work so he's bringing some home tonight! That's why I love this site.
