| | I am trying to finalize the crafts, but I'm not sure about day 5. For those of you who did the sheriff's badge or the star....was it a good craft? Did the kids like them? I'm also undecided about the chalkboards. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks. |

| We didn't care for either item. We have decided to do picture frames and take pictures of each child so they can remember their week at VBS. Kids love them because they can put them on the fridge(magnet on back) and show every one that comes over

| | The only two crafts I bought from Group this year were the sheriff badges and the chalkboards and was disappointed in both. Their optional craft for day 5 is really cute - on the website under director's helps - I think, and the kids would have a game to take with them and play later. I really wish we'd have done that one! It's VERY unusual for me to not like the crafts. This is the first year I have not done the entire craft line-up from soup to nuts. I hope they look at the crafts for next year - including price points, etc...
Blessings to you from Sue! |

| | I didn't care for the badges so we are using the maze for the older kids and the OT cowboy hats with the a badge on them. They are going to love it . I have already shared it with some of our staff and they love the idea . God bless Doreen

| | We are making a Sheriff cactus magnet from OT (IN-48/4894) and adding a "God is in charge" sign (1 in. sq. card stock) in his other "hand". The sheriff badges didn't seem like they would take long enough to complete, especially for the older kids. |

| | We used the chalkboards from Group on Day 4. They were inexpensive and very easy to do. Too easy maybe. They took no time at all, so let your Craft Leader know that they may want to have something to do to fill in the time (discuss Africa some more if you are doing the Prayer Bears, make some other very simple craft (bookmark?), finish a more elaborate craft from a previous day, etc,.) My youth assistant in crafts (my son) said that the kids did like the chalkboards. Also, be warned that the little foam shapes that came with the kit, tear easily if you are not careful "punching" them out. I had ordered some of the colorful western foam beads from OTC, and we used them instead on the chalkboards. For Day 5, we too made picture frames. $1 unfinished wood frames from Michael's and AC Moore. We "white washed" them (really watered down the paint) with blue tempra paint, had them soak a yard of jute in white glue and glue on the frame, making loops and curves around the frame. Added some wooden stars and TA DA!

| | Thanks for all the great ideas. I LOVED the white-washed picture frame. I guess I'm off to Michael's! |

| We got leather bracelets at Hobby Lobby and the kids put their names on them. It was a huge hit with the kids and easy on the teacher.

| | We went to a local craft store and found wooden die cut sheriff stars (about 25 cents each) and after the kids decorated with markers and stickers, we added a pin to the back (we found some that had double sided adhesive already on them). They put their names on the front and wrote "God is in Charge" on the backs to remind them of the Bible point. They loved them Victor Nieves Neshanic Reformed Church , New Jersey

| | Isn't it interesting that most of the responses had to do with the same two crafts? I, also, didn't care for the chalkboards and the sherrif badges. I have four children and I sat them down to do all five of the Group crafts to make sure they were easy enough, enjoyable to do etc. All four of them didn't care for the chalkboard or the sherrif badges. This is what I chose to do instead... I cut very thin plywood to about a 5 inch square (Home Depot and Lowes will do the cutting for you). Then, I painted chalkboard paint (also at Home Depot etc.) on the wood on one side. We haven't done VBS yet, but when we do, the children will put a strip of adhesive magnet on the back and then use the self stick foam western shapes (from Oriental Trading) to decorate around the edge of the front. It is a larger chalkboard, sturdier, cuter and easier for the children to make. For the sherrif badges, I found GREAT leather sherrif badges at guildcraftinc.com. They come in a pack of 24 along with the self adhesive pin backs, paint set and paint brush. We are going to forego the painting (since it will take alot of dry time) and just give them permanent markers to decorate the badge. We will use the paintbrushes and paint that came with the badges at a later date in our children's department. The badges come out to be $1.00 a piece. They are SO much cuter and my kids really like them too. I hope that helps! Kimberly in SC |
