Week before VBS and we are scrambling for decorations. We have some nice stuff. Some big buddies for up front, some painted murals for the walls...

But I'm trying to come up with some quick and easy crafty decorations we can use to fill in the blank spots. I printed out decorations for the giant sunflower, now can't find the original post where I got it -- maybe this has already been answered. BUT I'm having a terrible time finding brown tissue paper. I was thinking I could substitute black, but I can't find that either! Any suggestions?

We have our big decorating and set up this Sunday. Any ideas for chuck wagon chow table centerpieces, or wall decorations that are quick and easy with basic (easy to find) supplies would be appreciated. Something like the flowers that I could put a table full of teenagers to work on. Thanks!!!

Denise

Our VBS starts on Sunday evening.

One thing I am making as fillers for the "stage area" is grass buckets. Don't know what else to call them!

I took a sand bucket, spray painted it silver and will fill the bottom with rocks then stick in a great fake grass
bundle thing that I got at the Dollar Tree. It looks like tall monkey grass.

I am sitting this in front of the cinder blocks that are a part of my fence.

Total cost - about $2.25 per piece

How about making the fake haybales-they are cheap and so easy to make.  ALso if you got a feed mill near by see if you can have some empty feed bags and fill with old newspaper.  Or even covering plastic barrels with contact paper and duct tape to make the wooden barrels--I have used them all to fill empty spots in our VBS.  All are very easy to make and not to time consuming!

In our class room we just traced patterns of cowboy items(hats, boots, horse, horse shoe, sheriff badge, ect) and hung the all around the room like a border-In some rooms we even hung them from the roof.  Also we hung stars from the roof--Got them at the dollar tree-36 in a pack-Can't make them for that price!!

Hope these ideas help!

Blessings,

Jenn in PA

Thanks for all the ideas!

I actually tried making a fake hay bale, but I am obviously doing it wrong because it wasn't easy! I used cut up raffia and glued it to a box. I used a whole roll of raffia and it only covered one side of the box. It was a mess and looked not too zesty!

I should preface my post with "I am not artististic or crafty" Don't ask how I got "in charge" of decorations. And I might take the boxes and raffia on Sunday and let someone else take a stab at the hay bales.

Anyway, I can certainly manage filling bags and hanging stars (I think). What I'm thinking I might do, now that I have the bag idea in my head, is get some old pillow cases and make iron-on logos of labels for Oats, etc. then fill them. I can't draw to save my life, but I'm pretty good at computer graphics (I made some pretty cool name tags and door signs).

Thanks for the ideas, keep 'em coming.

Denise

Party stores usually have brown tissue paper.

Teacher supplies have some pre packaged western stuff.

Silhouttes are easy if you have an overhead projector.

WHen doing the haybales--Use shredded paper--I found that the small cut pieces work the best(about 1 or 2 inches long)!!  We used paper boxes and water boxes(Hold 6 gallon).  We took liquid glue-like Elmers school glue and put a big glob or two on--THen spread it across the whole side of the box.  WE then took handfuls of the paper and pushed it onto the box--LEft it dry for about 15 minutes(worked on other boxes while it dried) Shook it--Yes paper will fall off as along as there are no holes start the other side.  IF there is a space that has no paper just add glue and restick.  Then turned it and did the next side.  When it was dry--We painted them with gold and yellow spray paint (Not even $1 at Walmart).  ANd Yes it is messy--I had shredded paper everywhere for about a week-Was doing them in my spare time.  But it sweeps up much easier then real hay--Doesn't clog the sweeper!!

A really easy idea is to get some rope and clothespins and hang a clothesline.  We went to our local thrift store and bought old jeans and shirts. Throw a couple of bandanas up there and it will fill it in nicely for you

The clothesline idea worked great for us to fill in a long wall to the side of our stage... and we didn't even buy any clothes - a couple flannels or checkered shirts and denim jeans or skirts from the congregation/volunteer decorating team filled up our line :-) I think the decorating coordinator got permission to actually staple to clothes to the wall, then stapled jute as the string (draped/drooping appropriately where the clothes were hanging) and then used clothes pins only to make it look like the clothes were hanging.

We also cut squares of "western-looking" fabric with pinking sheares, folding them over jute string & stapled them in place, and then hung this along the hall, over windows, etc.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the great ideas!

Just had to share what I did this morning because it was so quick and easy and turned out so cute! I have a bunch of iron on transfer paper (I buy it in bulk :-), so I made up some logos that say "chicken feed" "horse feed" "wild oats" etc. I had two old pillows and a pillow case that I ironed them on. The pillows were already stuffed. The pillow case I filled with crumpled newspaper. The pillows were a bit tricky, since they weren't a "hard" surface to iron on. But actually, the transfers on those look a bit better, because they look "worn" and "rustic" where they didn't transfer solid. I tied the top with rope and tossed together in the corner they make quite the cute decoration! It took me a total of ten minutes to print out, cut out, and iron on all three.

I also found some paper models of ranch items (ranch barn, stable, chuck wagon, wind-mill, etc.) on-line and printed them out to put together. The instruction are in German, so I'll have to try  to figure it out without directions, but it should make cute little centerpieces for the chuck wagon chow table. They also have the "disney" characters with them, but I just won't use those pieces. Here's the link if anyone else wants to download and try: http://www.seite42.de/ind_be.htm#w

This forum has been a lifesaver for me. Thanks again for all the advice!

Denise

I made sunflowers with 7" black paper plates and bright yellow paper petals glued to edges with glue dots...stems are simply crepe paper streamers...leaves too.  Sorry no pics.  My girls club made about a hundred of them...so would be great for a table of teens.

Also check out the site at myvbshome.info.  Under decorating there are barrells made of cardboard. I made the in several sizes...Very easy...no craftiness needed....And they are real cute.  Rope, Bandanas, and hats are great area fillers....foam core silhouettes too.

Let me know how it all goes...our AR is not until July 30.
