We used Galilee by the Sea this year for the first time - for the past ten years we used the easy themes.  My question is this - do the children get bored with a repeated Marketplace theme, or do the different crafts keep it interesting enough?

Also, does Jerusalem Marketplace have a synagogue, too? We're debating between the two Group themes for next year, and I'd appreciate hearing from those of you who have focused on the HolyLand themes.

Thank you!

We've done all 3 Holyland Adventure programs and the kids love it more each year.  We have new shops/projects each year, although we do repeat some shop titles.  For example, we had the Carpentry Shop two years in a row, but with different projects.  The kids have never complained about any repetition.  In fact, we didn't have a Pottery Shop this year because we'd done it in the previous 2 years and several kids were disappointed!  We make a picture frame each year, but it gets made in different shops -- last year it was a mosaic project and this year it was a shell project.

I've asked our kids what they like best about this program and it's a two-way tie.  They love the dramas and they love that they get to choose how to spend their marketplace time.  Ours is unscheduled and the kids love it because they're rarely in an environment where they get to make those kind of choices.

We chose to do the JM for the last 3 years.  The kids have NEVER complained about the repeat in the basic theme.  They LOVE it!!    I can't imagine going back to the "easy" VBS themes that are offered.  I am slightly disappointed that Group is repeating the original JM. But I figure this might be the chance to do it bigger and better than the first time, as we have been able to upgrade our decorations each year we continued with JM.  We love this program!  The kids love dressing in costume. We have been able to make costumes available to all of them, and they anxiously stand in line waiting for their turn to be fitted.  We might have to adjust a few things next year to make the program different, but I really don't think the kids will be disappointed that some things are the same. We've invested so much time and money in the JM decorations we don't want to change the theme now. We just finished our VBS last week and it was wonderful! We had about 60 children attend and we love the community outreach this provides.  We have a good group of community children who have been attending every year for about 6 years.  They're ready for VBS again, and it just ended! We have even had some children join our church's Christian school due to their exposure from VBS.  It's a great program!

This was our first year to do a HLA.  We did GBTS and it was awesome.  We usually average about 30-40 kids and this year our lowest number for any one night was 62, the highest being 87, kids, alone.  It does take more people to pull it off but well worth it.  Since you have done JM and I am planning on ordering it for 08, does it have a synagogue time or not?  The kids loved going to all the different shops but especially loved going to see the Rabi each night.  I have almost collected everything that I will need for BV and since it is not offered again, I want to be sure that we can get it and do all 3 HLA.  I only hope that they will come up with more HLA for the future.  The kids love and and also the adults.

Mississippi Girl,

Group has said that the Jerusalem Marketplace that they will be releasing for VBS 2008 will be basically the same thing with a few different touches than the one released in 2005. The Jerusalem Marketplace that was released in 2005 had a Synagogue School so the Jerusalem Marketplace for VBS 2008 will also have one.

God Bless,

Josh T. in Ohio

We alternate.  We do an Easy VBS theme one year and HLA the next.  We LOVE HLA and it has managed to stay fresh, so far.
