We are in PA and thought we'd try a trunk or treat since Halloween falls on a Wed. and we figure we'd have no one wanting to come to the church unless we did something enticing enough. We would like to expand it to reach out to our neighbors. Any suggestions/comments/hints etc. as to what works and doesn't? We will probably freeze so we may combine it with some indoor stuff. At this point, I do not want to do any of the predone Halloween alternatives. This is being done in conjunction with the youth group and probably the Wed. night prayer group. It will be after dark. Thanks in advance for your imput.

My last church had a great Trunk or Treat.  In addition to all of the games out of peoples' trunks, they had a hay ride around the property (our drive way/parking lot made a loop), petting zoo, & bouncies.  Face-painting always works well, and I was considering doing some old-fashioned sack races & 3-legged races in the gym this year at our fall fest.

Do lots of advertising!  People thanked us last year because we did something on Oct 31. We were one of the few churches who did not do it the weekend before.

We do a pumpkin decorating contest (people bring htem already decorated like a Bible character). Lots of fun. You can do the Pumpkin patch parable or a spin off of that.

Mal, even though you say you don't want to do a "pre-done" Halloween alternative, I'd encourage you to at least check out Wild West Fall Fest and Heroes Unmasked. They include neat, intentional outreach items that go beyond just the basic fun and games. Plus, you'll have great publicity helps ready and waiting!

Thanks Jodi. I'm very much aware of the programs. This is our first time ever doing anything remotely related to an official program. I have no problem with what Group has created but the others I'm working with aren't quite there yet. I've shared what you all do and our youth director has expressed an interest in learning more. It may or may not be addressed this year but your programs certainly aren't out of the question for down the road. Sowing seeds is some of what those of us in children's ministry even get to do with others in our church!!!!

I don't mean to appear stupid, but what exactly is a trunk or treat? I've never heard of it before.
