Using Game Votes, Polls, or Let's Talk as measurement, and your usual class attendance, estimate what percentage of your students have actually used the web site.

I'm finding kids this age are pretty new to this kind of thing. Never used a forum before etc. so It will take some encouraging and explaining how to use etc. before the usage picks up, at least for my class.

We have a core group of 10-12 kids who go on every week but we have had a tough time getting a critical mass to use the mygrapple site. We have about 45-50 kids in our 4th & 5th grade ministry so we have a long way to go. Because the use of an online site for "church" is new to the kids they have not been nearly excited as I thought they would be to use the site. Also up to 1/3 of our kids have limited access to the computer. They may have only one per family or they simply aren't allowed to use the computer. We have roughly 1/2 of our kids signed up to use mygrapple.

I've invited my Club 56ers to drop by my office so I can train them to login and post.  Wednesday night, one of the boys dropped by with Mom and Dad. I coached him through the login, showed him how to open Let's Talk, read the posts, reply and create his own new post topic.

It was helpful for Mom and Dad to see that the site is secure and also see how easy it is to navigate.  Maybe Moms and Dads might allow computer access if they see with their own eyes how easy, safe and Christ centered the site really is!

I agree with most of what has been said.  One of the things I've tried to do to get them involved is having contests.  For a month, everytime they post, their name goes into a basket.  If they post 2 times or 100 times, they have that many chances to win.  Then we have a drawing and the winner gets the prize.  It doesn't have to be something huge, but it could be.  Just throwing that out there in case anybody can use it.

If you can't make it with cardboard and duct tape, it ain't worth makin'...

See the forum topic "Fall 2008 Grapple Preteen enhancements." We are adding a lot of new enhancements that I think you and your kids will LOVE!

i agree as well. Two things we have done is put all of their activities on the "What's Happening" and have cut down on the paper flyers--parents and kids are slowly learning that if they go online they will see every activity in detail.

The other thing we did was a parent/child training during the Sunday School hour---we put the website on the big screen and took them through it...that worked for us!

Also, the fact our Senior Pastor showed it on the Big Screen as well during a service when he talked about how our church is reaching out into all the world--

We find more boys are on the website than the girls.

in the beginning about 40% of our kids were going on it... we started using grapple last september... and it looks like it's been about 5 months since any of the kids have logged on... when asked, the kids told me that they're not allowed to go online during the weekdays... i'm in a suburban area where kid are very active in sports and school... and it seems like my 5th & 6th graders aren't used to going online regularly...

i think they're still trying to navigate through the forum and get comfortable... nevertheless, the general consensus is that THIS is the best Sunday School curriculum they have used!!! we love grapple!

Hi Gloria -

My Club56ers didn't use MyGrapple that much last year either. However, when I brought my laptop (and my wireless card) to class week before last and showed the kids how to set up their own "page" and avatar on the updated site, they really got excited. A few of them actually got online and sent me a message, one requested a calendar addition and another posted on "Let's Talk". Then things got rather quiet.

I will be scheduling a Parent meeting for the fall and I think I am going to ask the parents to encourage the children to check the class My Grapple page each week. Even encourage them to do that together.

As my experience with how all us adults got going with Facebook pages and CMConnect pages, having someone else walk you through the websites really encouraged me to get involved. I think I need to do the same for our kids, so each week, I am going to bring in my laptop and walk each child through the updated MyGrapple features. Let them play a game, chat with each other in "Let's Talk".

We have been using grapple since September for our 5th and 6th graders. In general, they love it. We, too, have a difficult time getting them to go to the web site. They are really pumped about it when they leave on Sunday am but when they return the next week, only 8 of 30 have gone to the site. I think part of it is getting parents on board. I have started sending an email reminder on Wednesday, the reminder includes info. about the coming message for parents and a reminder for kids to go to the site and vote. In addition, I have challenged them to beat my score on Sumatra. We'll see how it works.
