Hey everyone,

I am planning to ask parents to attend an Infant Dedication "class" before they sign up for a slot to have their child dedicated. I am trying to figure out what to cover in the class. But, instead of re-inventing the wheel, I thought I'd ask you what you do... Any thoughts, resources, ideas?

Thank you for your time!

1) A brief relational connecting excercize to connect families to each other;
2) We introduce them to how the church can support families (children and youth, family, MOMs, budget, small groups, etc.)
3) A brief explain what dedication means in our context;
4) Review the commitment that they are making w/ dedication;
5) Logistics (Camera's ok. tech sheet, etc.)
6) Q/A

Hi Christiaan,

I will attach what we cover in our class.  I’ve also attached the commissioning statements that we do in front of our body.

Hope you have a wonderful Christmas!

Some "value added" options I've witnessed at large churches include:

* Certificates signed and embossed

* Multi-week course in parenting just prior to the actual dedication opportunity (led by the counseling department or someone with the kind of "heft" to make it helpful and positive rather than cumbersome)

* Opportunity for ANYONE AND EVERYONE to stand up front with the family--this is a very unique time for a family and I've loved to see extended families, dressed up, along side godparents [former catholics love this] and it creates a "photo op" that is priceless, long lasting and really intimate!

* Professional Photographer--Prestonwood has Lifetouch come in and take family portraits just prior to the event (when everyone is at their best) and it just adds a touch of class! Other churches have their own prefessional photographer come and set up an unused room into a sort of studio (brides rooms are fantastic for this) and it should cost your church nothing. They make their money on the "upsell" of pictures to the extended family that is gathered!

* The "Parent-Child Dedication Information Meeting" is an important opportunity to meet the pastor who will guide them through the process. Now the process differs for any and every church. Some churches have the parents and congregation repeat a promise or commitment that should be at least rehearsed prior to the event in "big church" (I've seen them done when the families are hearing the words they have to agree to for the first time and it really seems wrong). Depending on the service (at Wooddale, we conduct twice yearly Parent-Child Dedication Services at 5pm, and it is its OWN service and usually lasts 45 minutes (limited to 10 children). I would write out a prayer for each child, the parents would choose a verse that they would want to be their child's life verse (helpfully we provided 3 pages worth of verses that had been selected in years past) and I made sure that the grandparents, godparents, siblings, mom & dad and the child all had their names spelled correctly. Then I said that anyone could say a few brief words for that child (you can see it took 5 to 7 minutes per child, thus necessitating its own service). Sometimes I had children give a poem to their little brother, other times I had a parent sing a song for their child. And a pet peeve of mine is to DROP the singing of schmaltzy kids songs as the families are walking up to be greeted (like "Jesus Loves Me" or something else designed for kids rather than extended families gathered for this event). Usually the Parent-Child Dedication Service Information Meeting was a quick 30 minutes, and I didn't offer child care so parents would come with their little one in tow to diffuse the whole fear that their little child would somehow terribly embarras them...everyone sees that little children are squirrely and I love it when I sense everyone's relief!

We also have two-week course on what it means to dedicate a child before the Lord. Our Senior Pastor heads up this class and emphasizes the importance of the roles that the parents play in the spiritual upbringing of the child in the Lord. Couple other things we do:

1. We encourage the parents to pick a life verse for the child. It's kind of neat.... bunch of the kids in our ministry have and know their "life verse" that they were given for their own infant dedication.

2. We also encourage the parents to invite friends and family to the dedication... it's a good way to reach out to non-believing family and friends.

3. We also give Children's Bibles to the families... it's like the baby's "first Bible..." but many parents tell me that this has become their bed time stories as they become toddlers.

This is my first year at this church.  In the past, parents could request an Infant Dedication any Sunday throughout the year. As the church began to grow and more and more young families were joining, they chose to have one annual Infant Dedication on Mother's Day.   We do a prepared litany and each child gets a certificate.

This past Mother's Day, I added a special recognition to our Nursery team highlighting their role. We also gave each nursery worker a red rose in a budvase and attached a Starbuck's gift card.  Below is the bulletin insert we added -

Highland’s Nursery Ministry

It’s not about changing diapers.

 It’s about changing lives….

Each Sunday, our Nursery volunteers open their hearts and their arms to care for and nurture the youngest of God’s children.  Yes, they do change diapers, rock babies, wipe noses and dry tears, but our Nursery volunteers know their true calling is to change lives for Christ.

Children’s lives are changed as they discover God’s love, comfort and care through these faithful servants who care for them.   Parents lives are changed as they grow closer to God through Jesus Christ  in worship and Sunday School.

Today as we dedicate children to God, we recognize and celebrate the following individuals dedicated to changing lives through Highland Nursery ministry.

(List of names.)
