I just found "Healthy Snack Alternatives" while cruising through all the PowerLab website pages:

http://www.groupvbs.com/powerlab/seventhdayadventist.asp

It's posted under "Modifications for the Seventh-Day Adventist Churches" but I think it's great for everyone. My son has food allergies, and many of the snacks for AR were not safe for him (his allergies are not just the "common" ones). I had to pack a sack-snack each day, attempting to give him a similar snack so it would still fit with the Bible Point - but I'm not as creative with food as I am with crafts. But these healthy alternatives would allow him to have the exact same snack as everyone almost every day!!!

I'm definitely taking these to our Steering Team meeting tomorrow (which consists of our 3 co-directors & new youth ministry leaders). THANKS GROUP!!!

In the future could "alternative" healthy snack ideas be included with the kits the rest of us get?
I stepped up to help plan VBS this year because I was appalled at all the junk we shoveled at those children last summer. In the Power Lab planning kit, only one of the five suggested snacks could be considered healthy.

I haven't read each and every day's snack directions, but for Day 1 Group did provide "healthy options" right in the instructions. Like, for Day 1, they suggest rice cakes, raisins and cream cheese instead of cookies, candy & frosting. I'm sure there are other suggestions in the other days - but I don't have the kit with me at work so I can't look it up.

God Bless!
~Cassie

It's VBS...I don't think the kids or parents are expecting carrot sticks!    I think Group does a great job with the snacks. It's typical kid friendly stuff made cute and applicable for the days activities.

I agree Missy. Plus, it's a snack not a dinner. Since we do not offer a meal before VBS I always remind kids and parents to make sure they have something to eat at home and that we will take care of the "dessert". We do at times change the snack (keeping the Bible Point in mind), but we still keep it tasty and sweet. And we also make sure we know about any allergies so we can provide an alternative.

I think this year's Alternate menu for our Adventist brethren was a fabulous idea!

I worked with a VBS last year (not Groups) and the snacks were terrible.  The kids didn't want to eat them!  So I was pleased to see snacks that the kids were sure to gobble up!

I didn't mean to sound so angry in my first posting. I've just watched so many friends struggle with serious weight issues. I bristle at this idea we push that it's only fun if it's unhealthy food. It's like an alcoholic saying it's only fun if they're plowed. The snack suggestions for the Adventists were pretty healthy and still fun stuff. We run a morning program so they eat snack about 11 a.m. It's hard to justify that as a "desert."

The irony also strikes me that we as a group can worry so about our children's souls, but teach them to mistreat their bodies. Isn't a physical discipline related to a spiritual one?

Ooops. That should be "dessert."
