...I agree, kids come to VBS to have fun, get a small snack (come on, it is one cookie, or one pudding cup--buy sugar free even) and have a good time.  I understand that obesity is on the rise.  But if they won't even eat it, then it is a complete waste...

Amen Misty! Besides, with all the fun (jumping, dancing, running around) those calories are burnt way before VBS is over. Hey, even I come to VBS to have fun and a "sweet" snack!

If the kids like the sweet stuff it's because that's what they have at other times. Rarely, does a child come through your program who really doesn't eat some of the stuff we consider unhealthy. It seems every kid knows what a doughnut is and fries at McDonald's and every parent knows not to make those regulars in their weekly diet. It's snack time and the amount of what we serve isn't going to make a child obese. We have them for 15 hours of their life--I don't think we are heavily impacting their diets if parents are teaching and modeling balance in their food choices and for that matter, all aspects of their life. The snacks are fun--the kids seem to like the creative aspect. We do FW Friends as well and their snacks are modeled the same way. Kids ask every week what the snack is a rarely turn it down.

Yeah, usually our leaders are lining up for the snacks too.  We all need a sugar boost

What?  I'm not supposed to include McDonalds as a part of a healthy diet?  AGHHH!
Just kidding...we're more of Chic-fil-A people.  Much healthier!

When given a poll two years ago our VBS kids all voted for cupcakes everyday! Could you imagine...

PL Day 1 - Be thankful: Decorate a happy face cupcake.

PL Day 2 - Help others: Mucky Mud Cupcake.

PL Day 3 - Be brave: Save a buddy cupcake. (Gummy bears, lifesavers, frosting)

PL Day 4 - Life forever: Infinity for me cupcake.

PL Day 5 - Faith on Fire fruit cupcake.

And you know, cupcakes are better for you than cake portion wise.  Also you can make a cake mix with diet soda instead of the oil and eggs and that saves fat and calories.  I actually think it taste better like that.  It's moister.  A can of pumpkin instead of all that stuff is really good too.  You don't really taste the pumpkin, but you get the nutrients.  Then you just top it with fat free cool whip.  WahLa!

So you see...we have just reached a good compromise on the whole healthy snack thing!  Better for you cupcakes!

You can also substitute applesauce for the oil and it makes the cupcakes super moist and yummy--and healthier.  Can use egg substitute or just the whites....who knew cupcakes could be so healthy!

Glad I found someone to agree with me, about this being a happy event and not a nutritional lesson. I am one to line up for my cupcake! Sorry, I need a sugar boost after 175 kids go through my craft room each day!  I run around so much I'm sure it's gone by the time I hug the last little one goodby!  I too am going to make cupcakes tonight....I now have the urge for carrot cake ones....I'll use a mix, but I will only eat one and take the rest to church for a meeting tomorrow! Lest I fall to temptation!<img src="http://forums.group.com/Skins/Blue/Images/EmotIcons/Tongue.gif" width=20 border=0> I think we should be healthy when possible, substitute away, sugar free, low fat, cool whip instead of frosting...what ever, Remember those little ones, at least at our church ,will sing play, and run off those calories by noon!  Then Mom can decide what nutritious lunch to serve.  Hey didn't John the Baptist eat locusts and wild honey???  I'm not sure on his protein choice, but honey from the comb is really sweet!  I didn't mean to sound dogmatic about sweet treats, but just remember kids need to have some fun snacks too!  Crafty Bonnie
