Hello all!  It has been a long while since I have posted to the board.  Our church has had some trying times but we are starting to turn things around and are looking to start a children's program on Sunday evenings.  I will be leading the program and would like to start the program out by serving dinner (this is something we have never done before).  Can anyone who has served dinner before give me any suggestions on simple and easy things to prepare and serve?  Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.  I won't have a lot of volunteers so I need to make this as simple and easy as possible but I think that the dinner thing is a great tool to use.  Thanks for your help!

Spigetti or chilli are real easy meals to make for a croud.  You can always use youth/children to help serve.

Group's Friendship First curriculum starts with a meal.  The curriculum is available for all ages and center around the idea of sharing your faith through friendship, so a fellowship meal is recommended.

Some of the easier meal suggestions that are big hits at our church are

-a baked potato bar (baked potatoes with an array of different toppings)

-salad bar (if you add protein items like grilled chicken, beans, pepperonis, etc. you have a complete meal)

With children, I find that it's best to keep the meal simple or at least provide "make your own" options so children can self-select.

Another fellowship meal idea that was popular with everyone at our church, especially the children, was spiral-sliced ham, good ole macaroni and cheese (from the blue box), green beans and rolls.  Even one of our picky eaters came back for seconds!!!

I think a Make-Your-Own dinner such as Tacos and/or wraps would be a fun way to start the fellowship and break some ice. How about my "Power Lab" Lab Rats? I mean Lab Wraps!

Lab Rats Wraps

Prepare or buy tortilla wraps. Have adults/kids create their own lab  "mixture". Use Slice green stuffed olives, red bell peppers, and shredded lettuce, cheeses, corn, chicken and/or ground beef/turkey, etc.

At the previous church served, we did Wednesday and Sunday evening meals. LOGOS publications in PA has a cookbook for large groups. the recipes are tested and easy to prepare. One thing to keep in mind - preparation makes it all go easier - get a team together to help you clean and set up the kitchen before the day of the meal. then another group to help with prep and cooking and another couple of guys to help with clean up.
also - for a break ask one of the pizza places about a special deal, Papa Johns has the $5.00 pizza deal and thats usually pretty good and gives every one a break.

Here is a favorite we use every yr at VBS..."Tacos in a bag"
Get snack size bags of Doritos...gently crush them in the bag
Brown ground beef and add taco mix according to directions on package
Spoon beef mixture into bags on top of crushed Doritos
Let kids add their own toppings: shredded lettuce, grated cheese, sour cream, taco sauce or salsa, etc
Serve w/ a plastic fork...they eat from the bag and everything goes into the trash when you are done!

We also do the traditional Sloppy Joes (Manwich mix) and hot dogs, which I throw in the crockpot w/ sauerkraut.
You may want to ask your congregation to join you in sandwich making after church, since you are doing this on a Sunday night...get bread, lunch meat, cheese, and put them together then serve w/ mayo, mustard, etc that the kids put on and chips. You can do PB and J...just have to be sure you have no kids w/ peanut allergy.

Blessings! Kimberly

Walking tacos (taco in the bag)---YUM

We are doing a dinner as a fundraiser and spaghetti is cheap and easy and can serve alot on a small budget.  Toss in a piece of bread and butter, a couple cookies as dessert and there ya have it!
