I have at least one child that I know will be attending this year(mama is a leader) that has a food allergy to nuts and dairy. I would love to offer her a snack that fits the bible points too. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Lila,
My son has food allergies, too, so I will be designing his own version of the snacks. I haven't figured it all out yet, but I do know that for the Sink-or-floats, he'll have his own can of Diet Root Beer and Rice Dream Ice Cream. I will probably bake him his own sugar cookies using non-dairy substitutes (since I'm sure our volunteer bakers will be using butter in their recipes). I haven't really sat down and planned all the substitutes yet, but the Healthy Alternative Snacks that Group posted on their website is one place to start. We serve 2 snacks at our KidsCamp (VBS), so our director has decided to probably use the alternatives in the a.m and the original snacks in the p.m.

When I get all the details of my snack alternatives written down in a real 'plan' - I'll post them here :-)

OK, since you posted this, I just HAD to come up with my alternative plan A few notes about my list:

Homemade = rice milk & butter flavored Crisco used as dairy substitutes in baking/cooking
Note: my son is not allergic to nuts of any kind, so peanut butter is used on Day 4; some kids allergic to peanut butter are OK with almond butter, but even an all-fruit jelly could be used.

Dairy/Corn/Soy/Oat-free Options:

Day1 - Thankful faces
Homemade Cookie
3 raisins/dried fruit
Homemade frosting
1 orange slice (real fruit, not candy)

Day2 - Mucky Mud

***still looking for allergy-free "mud" snack***
2 dairy-free wafer cookies

Day3 - Sink-or-Floats
1 scoop Rice Dream Ice Cream
1cherry
diet root beer (or Diet Rite grape, if available)
ice

Day4 - Infinity for Me
O Organics round crackers (avail at Safeway - not sure where else)
peanut butter in baggie (clip off corner to squeeze)

Day5 - Faith-on-Fire Fruit
scoop Rice Dream Ice Cream
bright fresh fruit
3 raisins/dried fruit

Last year out Snacks coordinator was awesome about having my son's snacks & lunch alternative waiting for him when he came through the line - and by the end of the week there were some kids that mentioned they wished they had gotten his version of the snack!

God Bless!
~Cassie

You could use the Bonus Snacks on the Freebies and Updates section of the web site.

The alternative snacks are a great place to start - but there are still allergy concerns with most of them (especially dairy). That's why I still have to find allergy-free alternative for my son. I tried to convince the other directors that we should go totally healthy on our snacks, but that idea was partially shot-down... the afternoon snacks will probably be the 'sweet' Group snacks in original curriculum, and the morning snacks will be a healthy alternative - possibly the alternatives Group provided, or something similar, but definitely will tie into the bible point for the day.

I've also thought about the entire snack option being allergy-free, but to change all the snacks to truly allergy-free foods would increase our food costs too much. Trust me - as a mom who shops & cooks for a kid with allergies - it's not inexpensive.

But I think it's great if the VBS Director and Snacks person are open & willing to make modifications to accommodate kids with allergies, so the snack they get is similar to the regular snack. I know the parents will appreciate the effort, and the kid(s) will feel even more loved and appreciated.

Applesauce is a good substitute, could even add green food coloring so it isn't so plain.

Ok PJ now you are reminding me of an old buddy of mine and Peggy's
