Question ... Do you all provide an alternate snack each night for those kids with allergies or do you ask them to bring something? After reading this I can see we could each be dealing with a variety of allergies and how can we accommodate them all? Is there a basic staple food we could have on hand that all kids could eat? (Can you tell I have never had to deal with allergies in my home?)

Hi,

We have had only a few kids with allergies through the years.  Each time the parent has offered to provide a snack if necessary.  However, since we serve a main dish with fruit and/or veggies as well as a snack, there has always been part of the meal that the child can eat.

Our hope is that each child has been given something to eat before attending - in fact we remind parents this is a light meal.  Some kids without allergies often choose not to eat much of the meal simply because of personal preference.  Sometimes a child will only drink milk or water.  That's OK.  I don't feel I need to require alternate foods for kids with allergies or kids who are just picky eaters.  That's what has worked for us.

Blessings, Meg
