What is your vision as a Youth Pastor of accountability partners? What should they do? What should they be? Thanks in advance for your feedback! I really need help with this.

God Bless,

Josh,

Thanks so much for your heart in serving Him and loving His kids.

Accountability is a firm Biblical principle that is essential to the health of the believer no matter what age. There are obvious answers to your question and some that are food for thought. Here have been my observations from 13 years in ministry:

1. Same Gender
2. True Believer
3. Spiritually stronger
4. Someone that will actually pray with the individual.
5. Possibly someone who has gone through a particular struggle.

Just some food for thought. I'll be praying for you!

A few of my thoughts in addition to the great thoughts above.  I have found in my own life that having a group of 3 of us as accountability partners is much more effective than 2.  What if 2 are struggling at the same time?  Nothing would please Satan more.  Being a pastor, I do not use anyone in my church.  If it is for my students, I ask one of my leaders to be it.  I have in the past had seniors as accountablity partners to middle school students.

My "accountability partner" became a 65 year old lady who came to youth group and generally began praying for, then loving the kids.  I have moved on but she is still steadily there.  The kids email me, sometimes sharing some hard stuff.  I copy her the e-mails with my replies.  She's in on all my conversations with the kids.  We pray for each other.

This is an unusual, accidental, accountability solution for a new situation that works.
