This is our 1st Group VBS. I am a little uncertain of the role of Crew Leader. Where do they get the material and discussion questions for each station and each night. How do they know what to do and say. I am probably missing it in a book somewhere, but there isn't a separate packet for them. Lord Bless.

Actually, there is. Crew leaders each should get a crew leader's manual, which has all of the stuff you mention. There is an edition for Preschool and one for Elementary (everyone else). A crew leader is a "shepherd," taking his or her group of 5 kids to and from each station along the way. It is they who really get to know the kids by name, and work closely with them. Several crews together make up a group that travels together.

We never had crew leaders until 2 years ago. I was a little confused and worried too! However, I now realize that the crew leaders are pretty much one of the most important parts of VBS. The kids love them and they do so much!!! Reinforcing especially!

Crew leaders are very vital in this VBS.  My crew leaders complained that they didn't have enough "one on one" time with the kids, so this year I am going to try to give us an extra 10 minutes so they can have that relationship building time.

The station leaders will also tell the crew leaders what to discuss at each station, but the manuals are great.

One tip for games... I type up the questions for each game and print them on index cards.  Then I laminate them.  Often, crew baskets are left inside where they won't get wet, etc. And this way the games leader can just pass out and collect the cards after discussion!

I create a little crew notebook for each crew leader. It has information relevant to the job (like the little booklets you can buy from group), daily traveling schedules, copies of the jokes from the director's manual, crew lists (with addresses), info on leading a child to Christ, and places to jot down notes (especially when kids tell them things they want to remember to follow up about). We have a training session with all crew leaders where we go through the notebook contents.

I leave it up to staion leaders to copy and pass out the discussion questions relevant to their station. Sometimes the station leaders forego the copies and just verbally ask the questions, giving time for disucssion in between each question.

If you'd like to see some of the crew leader notebook material I've put together I'd be happy to share. Just email me at deannag@northlakeonline.org.

I do the same thing for all leaders.  I create a pamphlet with rotation charts, welcome letter, any hand outs they need, etc.  I then collect them at the end of each day and refill them with the items for the following evening.

I am a very organized person and like everyone else to be...although that doesn't always happen!  lol

The job of Crew Leader is the easiest, but most important one! I actually stepped in as a crew leader for our last field test--yes, directing VBS AND being a crew leader. It was wonderful! The station leaders give you all the info you need--you really just support them and follow their lead. And it was awesome to build relationships with 5 sweet and active kids!

I was apparently speaking out of trust that Group would repeat what they did last year - and I was wrong! I just looked at the Elementary Crew Leader manual stuck in the front of my Director's manual, and I found that the discussion questions are NO WHERE TO BE FOUND!!! So it's back to running them off and hoping that the station leaders remember to do them.

I have to admit I was disappointed that the questions aren't in the crew leader booklets.  We used them for the first time last year and I got many positive comments from our elementary crew leaders about them.  They loved having the questions in advance...giving them a bit more time to reflect on how they would answer the questions.  The preschool crew leaders didn't use them.  We probably won't buy them this year since the questions aren't in them.

I, too, hand out a packet to crew leaders at training with crew leader basics (their role, goal, sample schedule, leading a child to Jesus, safety/security, room locations, etc).
