Just a note for all you budget minded people out there.  The sand projects are fun, but, as an experienced user of sand projects, I have two good ideas.  1) if you need to get sand into something small, OT will include like, one funnel, too much waiting, so we found old envelopes( the address had changed at a company), but you could use cheap ones from the dollar store. you cut the lower two corners off about an inch and a half up ( small envelopes make smaller openings work better) now you cut off the tip that's left and open it to form your paper funnel.  We also use a "SAND TABLE" I know that goes against groups idea of floor work but !! I  put a sm. or med. cheap paper plate under each "thing to be filled" and put the litttle funnel inside of it and then as they pour from something  into a container any spills are on the paper plate and can be neatly folded and re-poured into the right container.  We store large sand amounts in old glass spice island jars, they have screw on lids and you can see the color of the sand. We found a spice set complete with chrome stand at KMart last year on sale and use that for 12 colors of sand ( you tape over teh plastic lids and leave only one or two hole open. We also had access to clear 35 mm film containers, we put the right colored sand in them and my husband drilled a small hole in the top. we use clear packing tape to close it until it's needed then it comes off and the sand pours out.  We also put several small holes in them to use as shakers for pictures. they look like spice bottles, but store very well in gladware tubs from year to year.<img src="http://forums.group.com/Skins/Blue/Images/EmotIcons/Tongue.gif" width=20 border=0> Crafty Bonnie

I have gotten the sandy tubes from Guildcraft.. and they seal off just as well as any I have used before.. they do come with several funnels per package... but I love that envlope idea.. I am going to try that one!!

Also.. the idea of hand sanitizer does sound better.. but I for one would rather vaccume and sweep than scrub and mop up gel.. yuck!.. and we have boys that would fling it around.. just a few.. but enough to make a mess.

I think I have the best craft leader in the country... she has come up with some great, inexpensive alternatives to the crafts as we are a growing church who has a huge turnout for our VBS but not too many people who have come to the point of being regular givers. Charging for VBS wouldn't work well in our area, either... families couldn't afford it.

Day 1: Beaker/test tube shaped name tags from Oriental Trading with a key chain (also from Oriental) on which to place the Buddies. This also means we don't have to buy nametags other than sticky ones for the first day.

Day 2: First aid kits... I found some soap dishes at hotel supply experts for a great price!

Day 3: Slime, using a recipe from someone she contacted in this forum, in small air-tight plastic containers from US plastics.

Day 4: Growing buddies from the Bonus Craft site(can't get much cheaper than that! LOL)

Day 5: Bracelets with the color changing beads BUTwe really liked the colors representing different people groups to pray for, so she found UV beads that you can purchase by color and we will enlist the help of some of our senior members of the church to make up little packages with two of each color in it along with the cording. She found the beads at teacher source (we are substituting yellow for green since jungles can also be sunny... yea, it's a stretch but it'll work... and we'll use regular white ponly beads for the snow areas). I also ran across an unbelievably inexpensive site to get P'leather lacing... JKM ribbon.

The reason I'm sharing all this is in hopes to help someoneelse savethe time we spent finding these things!

I LOVE the beads!  I've been playing around with making something that would hang off a backpack or work as a keychain since I'm not sure about the guys liking the bracelet idea, BUT this makes it even cooler!

I liked that Group called their bracelet a "wristband" instead of a bracelet...might make it more appealing to the guys.  When we did JM a few years back, I had several boys who wanted to come to the Jewelry Shop everyday to make another necklace or bracelet...go figure.

Thanks for the inexpensive ideas.  We too are finding cheaper versions or different crafts.  I plan to use the homemade slime, but thought I would use the small play dough containers (4-6 for a $1 at dollar tree and the label just slips off for easy decorating).  I figured they would keep the slime from drying out, since they keep play dough from drying out.  You can use the play dough for the preschoolers, just put in plastic baggies.  Another alternative is the yogurt containers with the plastic lids, but they are harder to come by.  I want to do the plastic soap dish first aid craft too, but want sample size alchol wipes, antibacterial cream,etc. - any idea where I can find these things?

As for the UV beads, I had already planned to buy mine from the same site, but I was going to buy a craft like the beaded cross key chain and just use the UV beads instead of what is provided (regular pony beads) OR buy the letter beads to spell out pray on a bracelet and use the UV beads on either side of the word.  We aren't happy with the missions or the cost, so we decided to buy "Forget Me Knot" plants to plant and decorate (they have a cross on the pot and come from S&S worldwide, I think) and deliver them to the nursing home nearby as our missions.  We would also send a pamplet on how God is always with us, never forgets us, etc., so that they would know they weren't alone. The bracelet would serve as a reminder to pray for the elderly in the nursing home and in our community.  I thought of this idea because my husband's grandma is in an assisted living home and she tends to get depressed.  They look forward to seeing my kids come in and I thought that allowing the kids to deliver these plants would certainly brighten their day and spirit.

We plan to make our own polymer ball, still working out the formula.  We are making our own plant to take home and a foam science notebook to report the progress of the plant.  Lastly, we will probably do a sandy test tube or the like, my niece 11, loves sand art and bottles.

Lisa I really like the idea of the Forget Me Knot plants. I think we might do a similar project with the elderly members of our church that are house bound and can't make it to church. I think it would really brighten their day.

Also those of you thinking about doing something different with the UV beads for the boys, why don't you use lanyard string and make a key chain. You can find kits really inexpensive and you can buy they string inexpensive as well.

We are also using the UV Beads for a craft, but decided to go a different route with them.  For Avalanche Ranch we found a "7 Bead Cross" project on a scouting website.  Last year we made them with leather cording and used them as back pack charms.  This year we found glow in the dark string and will make the 7 bead crosses on that string using the UV beads.  The lesson will be that with the Son we shine, and His light shines in the darkness for us.

Where can you find the cross pattern?  That sounds great for boys and girls.  I love the way you can so easily tie it into our lessons!
